This is a joint meetup with the Cleveland Independent Movie Goers. (Their RSVP list is here but I will add our RSVPs to their total.) Come see a video game-related movie at the Cedar Lee (a great East-side theater for indie films), and join us if you can for dinner beforehand and discsussion/drinks/snacks afterward. "THE KING OF KONG: A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS" From this review: "An underdog story plays out by way of the joystick. You might assume holding the all-time high score on a 1980s upright Donkey Kong machine is an achievement so dubious (not to mention potentially embarrassing) that any questions or disputes over such a silly, trifling matter could at least be settled amicably. But as Seth Gordon's weirdly enthralling, hilarious documentary 'The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters' demonstrates, this is extremely serious business--at least to a narrow but passionate niche of classic arcade gaming buffs who fanatically guard their records and protect their heroes with a zealotry that would probably be terrifying, were it not so damn funny. The movie's proof of that old adage about battles being more vicious when the stakes are so low. It's also the rousing crowd-pleaser I wanted 'Rocky Balboa' to be." DETAILS Come to any or all of these events: 6:00pm - Dinner at Brennan's Colony, a five-minute walk south down Lee from the theater. Ask to be seated with the "Movie Group." Cash preferred. Restaurant review and map - 2299 Lee Road. Phone: [masked]. 7:30pm - Movie (79 minutes). Meet in the lobby five minutes ahead of time, or look for the group inside. The Cedar Lee is in Cleveland Heights on the corner of -- wait for it -- Cedar and Lee. Afterwards, we will walk next door to Jimmy O'Neill's Tavern for discussion. Meet up again there (turn left as you exit the theater) or gather under the marquee after the film and walk with the group. Laptops running MAME and Donkey Kong are optional :) PARKING: See this PDF map. (Brennan's Colony is near the center, near Silsby and Lee.) The lots are metered, but parking is free after 6pm. IMPORTANT NOTE: In the world of Independent films, movie schedules sometimes change at the last minute. It is recommended that you check back a few days before the event to make sure the movie, restaurant, location or time has not changed. Thanks to Jim of the Cleveland Independent Movie Goers for organizing this and letting us piggyback!
