Event Details:
The Cleveland Game Devs Meetup group will be holding their Summer Game Jam event from 7:00 PM EST on Friday, August 24th 2012 through 3:00 PM EST Sunday, August 26th 2012. Game Jams are a unique experience where artists, coders, designers and musicians collaborate to build videogames or boardgames over a weekend based on a specific theme. As part of the Summer Game Jam event, we will also be holding a cook-out on Friday night. We'll provide grilled foods, including vegan options, on Friday night and beverages all weekend. If you can bring a dish to share it would be greatly appreciated but this is optional. We are also excited to announce that Handelabra Studio (home of the GAME.minder app) and CGD member Sean O'Rourke are helping sponsor the event. We have a limited number of free tickets available to students or qualified individuals thanks to them. Please contact mattperrin at gmail dot com to apply.

We will be holding the event at the Shaker|LaunchHouse startup incubator. LaunchHouse (http://launchhouse.com) is a lean new public-private partnership that fosters entrepreneurial success and job creation through seed capital, education and innovation. This Northeast Ohio organization connects new entrepreneurs with proven business leaders in a grassroots, for-profit model that can be successfully replicated nationwide. This is an exciting and unique space that will give our group plenty of room to work. Please note that we will only be using the LaunchHouse space during the hours specified below. We will not be able to provide sleeping locations or overnight access to the facility.

For this Game Jam, we will be participating in the 24th Ludum Dare Game Jam. Ludum Dare is one of the largest game jam events in the world with an emphasis on an open game developer community. On the evening of August 24th, community theme voting results will be collated together and the winning theme will be announced. Game Jam attendees will have the option to participate solo in the 48 hour "Compo" event or within a team for the 72 hour "Jam" event. It is highly recommended that people interested in working within a team form it in advance. Participants will need to bring their own laptops or desktops and whatever software or technology they need for creating games. Participants also have the option to build “paper prototype” games using whatever supplies they wish to bring. For more information on Ludum Dare or to sign up for the community, please visit http://www.ludumdare.com

I wish I could be "in" this time around. Way too much fun. But we've got too much going on for me to take a weekend off.

Final round of voting is up for the Summer Jam / Ludum Dare. I'm rooting for "Don't Go Outside". http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/...

I voted for that one twice.

I find it interesting throughout the voting that the most negatively rated themes still have hundreds of positive votes, and the top themes still have hundreds of negative votes. We are nothing if not consistently inconsistent.

Round 3 results are in. "Parallel Worlds" (+253), "Evolution" +219, "Colony" (+158), Deep Space (+27). Kind of sad that fifth place "Time Travel" came in with a -28.

Round 2 results are in... "Creation and Destruction" (+233), "Castles" (+167), "Companion" (+67), "Don't Go Outside" (58), "Secret World" (+19), "Self Destruction" (+1)

I haven't seen where it's written, do you know how do they decide the final theme after the rounds are completed? Do they just take the overall top vote getter, or is there more to it than that?

      August 22, 2012

    • Matt P.

Round 5 is the final round where they take the top 20 - 25 themes from the previous rounds and collate them together. They're starting the voting phases early this time. Round 5 should be up later today and then the results are unveiled at 9PM Friday.

I can see positives & negatives to this, but I'm definitely glad that it's totally separate from the official Ludum Dare. http://indiegames.com/2012/08/k...

Round 3 is up. I'm not too wild on this selection and flagged 50% of them as "-1"s.

I don't know if I'm old & curmudgeony or what, but I've done about 75% -1 on all rounds, with maybe a total of 2 dozen +1. Darn kids & lawns & such.

You need to sign up for the Ludum Dare website to participate and additional rounds will unlock throughout the next week. I am rooting for "Giant Monsters" and "Things Long Forgotten". Lots of awesome possibilities with those. :)

I'm probably going. I also live about 30 minutes south and could put some people up overnight if they wanted to save some cash. Gotta run it by my GF and you'll want to bring your own junk to sleep on in the living room :)

Sorry Jason, I totally missed that. I also forgot that this event is 2 days away from my wife's due date (whoops). I will not be attending.

Just a reminder that tickets are on sale for the event. You can buy them here... http://clevsummergamejam2012.ev... Also, if you know of any students that may want to attend, please let me know. We've been fortunate enough to have someone sponsor some devs (Thank you Sean!).

The details say "We will not be able to provide sleeping locations or overnight access to the facility". You can either get a hotel, or communte to the LaunchHouse. Also note that you don't have to be there at all times to participate. You could just attend the Friday cookount & work on your LudumDare entry from home for the weekend, if you prefer.
