Hello everyone,

Lots of cool stuff going on so I thought I should start sending out a newsletter to recap everything going on.

Tech Workshop Recap

We had our second Tech Workshop event this past Saturday at the Beachwood Library. It was a pretty fantastic turnout and it was great to meet some new people. Michael Robellard showed how to use Google App Engine as a back end solution and shared a source code example. To view his slideshow, go to http://michael.robellard.com/2010/08/developing-games-on-google-app-engine.html and you can grab the source code for his demo from http://bitbucket.org/dramus/samplerpg. And don't forget to check out his Facebook game, Railroad Empire, which uses Google App Engine. (http://apps.facebook.com/railroadempire/)

I also made a presentation on User Interfaces and User Experiences where I showed how human psychology can be used within game design. I touch on some principals to making a good experience and then give some suggestions on designing games for accessibility and rewarding game play. I am hosting the spreadsheet on my blog at http://www.pxlgames.com/2010/08/ui-ux-using-human-psychology-in-game-design/

I am planning on having the next Tech Workshop in early/mid September. If I can get some free time to get it working, I may have an augmented reality demo using Flash, Papervision3D and a webcam to share. If anyone else wants to present a topic or share something with the group, please email me and we'll set something up. Would love to see some artistic demos or a Blender or Unity presentation (hint! hint!)

The Fighting Game Project
We have our own Mortal Kombat style fighting game in the making as an open project for members to join. Thom "Techbear" Robertson is spearheading (pun!) the effort to create a fighting game inspired by Cleveland, featuring video-captured sprites of actual people performing martial arts moves. The project is still in its early phases with test footage and frames but any help in coding, animation or other areas would be greatly appreciated.

The Experimental Game Project - Zero Buttons Challenge
This is not directly related to the CDG group but there is a cool website called The Experimental Game Project that holds a "challenge" every month. The idea is simple. Game developers have 7 days to design, build and share a game based on a specific theme. This month's theme, Zero Buttons. As soon as I saw this I was hooked on the idea and I'm already on Day 3 of my project. Lots of neat ideas are already popping up within their website, including this prototype for a mouse gesture system by a friend of mine , http://switchbreak.net/blog/?p=87

To learn more, check out http://experimentalgameplay.com/

Well, that's it for now. See you guys on the 17th and have a great summer!
