Portrait Lighting Workshop

This location is shown only to members

This is the second in a series of lighting workshops. This workshop will cover the fundamentals of portrait lighting, both on-location and in the studio. We'll work on getting the best results using a variety of equipment, from portable, affordable speedlights to professional quality studio strobes.

Topics include:

  • "building your light" - starting with a simple one light setup, and building to more complex 3-5 light scenarios
  • How to create flattering light for any subject (choosing the right light and modifier for your subject)
  • Lighting styles, patterns and ratios
  • Light modifiers (a variety of equipment will be discussed and available to try out, from a 22" beauty dish to a 4' x 6' softbox)
  • working in the studio and on-location (differences in equipment and approach
  • how to get the most from your model - posing, technique, rapport
  • lighting and posing individuals, couples and groups
  • building your business - how to get started and build a successful portrait business
  • Image/portfolio review - we will have an optional 2 hour review session 1-2 weeks after the class on a weeknight where participants will be able to submit images they made during (or after) the workshop for critique and review.

We'll have a number of models to work with (in typical Click Monkeys' fashion, the photographer to model ratio will be very low, so you'll have plenty of time to work with each model, and you'll have the opportunity to "make your own" shot instead of just ending up with the same thing as everyone else). And, as always when we're working with models we'll have professional hair and makeup artists. There will be lots of hands-on shooting time and you'll get a great start to a solid portrait portfolio. The models will all sign full model releases.

The class will be taught by a professional wedding and portrait photographer who has worked as an instructor and teacher for over twenty years.

To get the most out of this class, you'll need a good understanding of basic camera operation - aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc. The class will not cover any of these basic topics. You do not need to have attended the introduction to lighting workshop - this class will cover all new material with very little overlap.

I had such a great time with everyone today! It was really great seeing everyone working, shooting, learning. The models were great and the group atmosphere was really nice. It's great to see the Click Monkeys community growing and coalescing - some consistent familiar faces that are always nice to have around and some new blood - a great combination! Thanks for making the workshop a success and for being such a great group of photographers!

Great opportunity to work with pro instructors, great models/subjects, high-end gear, and learn from some experienced peers. Will definitely do more workshops with Click Monkeys and Scott & Tim. THANKS guys.

Scott's lectures and demo shots while tethered were great lessons, and of course it was a delight to work our models. There were times when I wished that we could have been shooting tethered so we could see the results our fellow group-members were getting. Maybe enough of us could bring laptops/software to make that happen in the future. I think it could make it a more collaborative experience and perhaps limit how long some of the shooters shoot.

Good models, good instruction, good amount of time to learn and shoot as well. Fee for this particular class was reasonable.
