JavaScript Study Group: How to Learn JavaScript Properly Roadmap (Week 1)

This study group is for folks who want to learn and/or get better at writing JavaScript. Whether you're a budding novice or an experienced developer we welcome you.

The curriculum for this group is Richard Bovell's 6-8 week roadmap "How to Learn JavaScript Properly." Members can work at their own pace, pair program or partner with others on projects based on the topic of the week.

We will meet every week to work on and discuss the lessons. Also, some weeks we'll have a guest speaker to cover the topic of the week.

Below is this week's topic:

Week 1 and 2: Introduction, Data Types, Expressions and Operators (Please see roadmap for more info)

About: Richard Bovell

Richard Bovell is a front-end engineer and UI designer. While Richard has a computer science degree, everything he has learned about modern web application development and mobile app development is self-taught and is attributed to great programming books and free online programming resources—blogs, tutorials, open source libraries and frameworks, and the like. And for this reason, Richard is giving back with this blog.

Felicia, for those who wasn't able to make it today would you please list what things were discussed today and any assignments? That way, we can still keep up so that we can attend the next one. Thanks.

Looking forward to this study group as I created a front end sign in tool using bootstrap and I am looking to tie in a back end form control using JS. But am not sure which JS framework works well with bootstrap.

Do I have to sign up with Event Brite, or just show up if I've already RSVPed?

    September 7, 2013

    • Felicia

      No, not for this one.

Every two weeks is probably not often enough. I suggest once a week, even if it means letting Rails drift for a while. Every Rails programmer has to know - actually, has to be first-rate in javascript anyway.

I understand that the more experienced have their own work to do but it's probably not asking too much to want them to spend a total of 60 to 90 minutes of their time with the less experienced - The concept is called "giving back to the community"

Vie, I like that idea. Let's see if we can get everyone to go for this.
