Ahoy Swabbies!

Last night we had an incredible turnout at our first ever meetup/happy hour. It was great to meet everyone and it makes me really happy that everyone is as excited about Code Crew as I am. I think it's the people that will make the group a success and everyone I met was really cool, interesting, and passionate about learning how to code and/or teaching others how to code, so that's awesome! If I didn't get a chance to say hello to you last night I apologize and I hope to see you at the next meetup.

Based on suggestions from last night, here is how our group will initially be structured. This will all change as we feel things out but as of now this is how things will start off.

Weekly Collaborative Coding Sessions
Each week we can meet at a central location and crank out some code. Right now I'm working on getting us a permanent space and we may have to meet at a coffee shop for our first few sessions while we get things sorted out. Right now we're thinking about having our weekly meetings on Sunday afternoons and may try to set up a Google Hangout for those that can't make it in person. If anyone has office space, has a hook-up on a location or has suggestions for a place to have these meetings hit me up offline.

Happy Hours
Since everyone had such a great time at our first happy hour/meet and greet I think it would be cool to keep these going as a Code Crew tradition. I'm thinking we can also use the time that we're all together to present our projects to each other, speak on what we learned in the last month or so, share feedback on a course or a book, resources, etc.. After all of that is done, it's time to drink and socialize! Not sure on the frequency yet but monthly sounds good for now.

Group Projects & Code Challenges:
We agreed that it would probably be best if we broke out into teams to work on several different group projects based on our interests. If you have a project idea, present it to the group and see who wants to jump on board. Everyone can contribute in a different way. We have aspiring and seasoned front-end developers, back-end developers, designers and product managers on board so let's get the ball rolling!

I think it may also be cool to issue a monthly code challenge that's totally optional to work on. The first person to come up with a solution gets a free beer (or appetizer for those of us that don't drink) at the next happy hour. We'll find some tough problems to solve and even if we don't come up with a solution I think it's good to take a stab at these because it will force us to think of different ways to apply our new found programming knowledge. This would be perfect for those of us that don't have a group project to work on. If you get stuck, feel free to lean on your fellow Swabbies for support -- that's what we're here for.

Suggested Weekly Readings
Every week we'll post a suggested reading (totally optional to read) on our blog. These will mostly be links to good articles or tutorial videos on coding. If you come across a good article or tutorial that you think would be a good weekly reading for the group feel free to submit it and we'll get it posted on the blog.

Code Crew Hackathon
A lot of folks expressed interest in organizing a hackathon. I think this is an awesome idea and I say let's go for it. This is definitely something we would do later on down the line but if anyone is interested in organizing then definitely let me know. We can probably form a hackathon planning committee to work on this.

If I missed anyone's suggestion, definitely chime in with a response. For now I'll put placeholders on the Meetup calendar for the first collaborative coding session and our next happy hour/mini lecture series. As far as weekly readings, the suggested reading for this week is to simply poke around on the Code Crew blog. I'll get a code challenge up there today for anyone that's interested in working on a coding problem while snowed in this weekend. :)

Thanks again to everyone that came out and I look forward to seeing you guys again soon at the next meetup!

Best,
Jamal
