Monthly Meetup - Discussions and Code Katas

Hey everyone!

This month Ray and I wanted to try to do a little friendly and collaborative coding, so we're going to try to do some Code Katas! For those unfamiliar with code katas - they're a way to hone your coding skills and learn more about the technology you're using in a fun way. Essentially, we're hoping to pair (or 3/4/etc) up and give some katas a try. Using Ruby isn't mandatory (though we can of course provide more help this way), and if we don't find a kata set we all like, we can all just establish a problem we'd like to solve and go about it in our teams and discuss at the end of iterations. Something like a Code Retreat with Conway's Game of Life.

We're still hashing out the details, but we're going to try to make this one a lot of fun.

Standard conversations will of course still occur, and if anyone has something they'd like to present, feel free to let me know and we'll make sure to schedule that in as well.

See you on the 21st!

This sounds super awesome. I am bouncing in my seat right now. (Never seen a developer work besides in tuts) :-). Not very fluent in ruby but excited

Hey, just so everyone knows we'll be giving out some prizes from Code School tonight and we'll be working with Conway's Game of Life and possibly another alternative kata. See you all there!

I'm sooo super bummed that I can't make it now. Grandmas Bday party. Darn! Two of my students are coming.

In the vein of learning, I would be happy to pair up with someone and work on the kata using Objective C if someone wants it. We could throw together a quick iPhone app for the input and the result.

Otherwise I'm looking forward to honing those ruby skills! It's been a while since I've really used ruby and I'm sure I forgot nearly everything. ;)

That sounds excellent! I think we're going to try to keep it as open as possible for technologies - it'll be a good way to stretch them mind a bit :)

I'm coming back from NY on the 19th, so if I'm not completely exhausted, you can count me in. I don't know very much (obviously, since I'm the noob of the group), but this sounds like a good learning experience.
