Hi everyone. The CodeCause group is getting together over at TREX starting at 7pm tomorrow night - Friday night. They will be working on the HealSTL.org site for Antonio French (Alderman for the 21st Ward) and the city of Ferguson. It is a great opportunity to get some experience and hang out while helping a fantastic cause for our community. Stay as long as you want. They're planning on being there late. Please email me if you have any questions.

    Have a good night!

    Tom

I'm not going to be able to make it tonight, Tom, but would still like to be involved in some way. Is there a repo up on Github or anything where I could look at what's been done, what's planned, etc and contribute when I can?

I'm at Sauce on the Side (Pine and 9th). I'm having a calzone dinner. I'll be there in about an hour. It's expected to be stormy this evening. I'm the meantime, someone take a look at the thoughts I posted on the HealSTL Trello and also look at the healstl.sql file I posted in my BitBucket. The link to it is on Trello.

BTW, if we're going to get this #HealSTL project done, we need to organize a few more meetups and soon. I'm getting sick and tired of my parents sharing their biased opinions about the whole Michael Brown thing and their dislike of Al Sharpton, etc. which is actually the here-say opinions of the outside news media that can't find Ferguson on a map let alone tell other people where Iraq is. I want to be as objective as possible and not let there opinions influence my work. (I'd move out, but I'm broke.)

Is anyone out there in this community working on CS50x? I'm hoping to knock out a week in one night!!

    August 27

    • Kevin S.

I'm here and available Anthony, Shannon and Andrew. I'm located in the front corner (near Washington) table.

    • Anthony

Shannon, sorry I missed you last night. I was kind of a deer in headlights! Met and talked to lots of folks involved in some way with cs50x... either finished, finishing or somewhere in the midst of it. Hope you made some good connections!

How late is this going to run? Just got off work and don't want to drive all the way out for nothing. Thanks!

    August 29

    • Matt D

We are just getting started, so you definitely won't be driving out for nothing.

Do a fair amount of people stay late? Like, if I got there around 11 would it be worth it?

I don't know if I will or not. Probably grab something to eat and try to stay.

Does it matter what time I show up?

I only see laptops, but if you want to lug that thing around I don't see why you couldn't.

Just to let everyone know, I DO NOT work for the NSA. Just cause I added a CB Radio antenna to my software defined radio project doesn't make me a narc for Uncle Sam. Although, if you wanna help me narc on the narcs, or know how to crack P25 radio encryption, that would be much obliged.

Has anyone traveled to neighboring cities (KC, Nashville, Louisville, Chicago) to go to programming meetups? There some I've been thinking about going to. The Girl Develop It and others groups look great, but it's a 3-4 hour drive.

I don't think the CS50x class allows me to actually understand the principles behind the pieces they show you.

Bring a bag of Reese's peanut butter cups. See me of you want any. I might need to toss them in a cooler first. They've been with me outside most the afternoon, but the foil should hold their shape.

You know what, forget that project on the RaspberryPi. I just ordered an ODROID. I'll show who's project of next month.

In an attempt that more brave than foolish, I'm trying to see if I can get GNURadio and GQRX to work on my Raspberry Pi. So far, the installation process for GNU radio is at 62%. Most of the errors encountered are warnings about how the ARM assembly language command swp{b} is depreciated or that the compiler ran out of memory. It still hasn't stopped me from trying to get it to work.

    Hi Everyone,
    I am Shaurya.
I recently joined Wash U as a masters and PhD student in Computer Science.

I wanted to come to this event which looks pretty cool.

I do not have a ride and I live on Delmar loop, is someone going to the event from this area and would b kind enough to offer me a ride.

    Thanks

    August 27

    • Shawn J.

Hey, I'm not from the area but if you need a ride there I don't mind picking you up

Can I bring my 13 year old son and his friend (they are working on a game)?

    August 27

  • Jason C.

Good news everyone! Aside crime possibly making you think of Professor Farnsworth from Futurama, I've managed to get the SDR (Software Defined Radio) running on my Raspberry Pi hacktop. All it needs now is an ncurses-based interface b/c gqrx and SDR# require too much resources.

Almost thought it was this week. To bad it isn't. Life is kinda crappy here in NOCO at the moment. 8/29 can't get here soon enough.

Thanks, but now that I know about it, I kinda wish I had signed up for it a couple of months ago. I do have an project that's going on involving software defined radio and eventually MongoDB

Pulse Pizza is back! Schlafly is donating beer! Red Bull is coming to the event!

This will be a Code Until Dawn to remember! We'll be unveiling the first CodeCause.org project completed by our members and the first causes from the community will be presenting to the group.

This great meetup is starting to grow - If anyone is interested in helping us out with organizing the events and sponsorships, please let me know.

    Have a great night!

Hi Tom, it's a little late I realize but I'm wondering if you have time this month for one more nonprofit group to pitch an idea. I would love to pitch my St Louiis Space Frontier idea for a special Nov 8th Code till Dawn at our Gateway to Space conference. If not in August, I'd love to get on the September calendar. Thanks!

I have recently taken an interest in coding, when I realized that a specific program I wanted didn't actually exist! It seemed like a simple enough concept, a program that could randomly roll attributes and select skills and abilities/spells for a tabletop roleplaying game I play with my friends, so I figured, "well hell, I've always wanted to learn how to code anyway."

I've been plugging away on codecademy with Python for a few days, and actually managed to make the first little bit of my program! It's nothing too impressive, but I'm a bit proud of myself, you know? It's a cool feeling, figuring that out, even if I still only have the vaguest clue of what I'm doing.

I'm definitely interested in learning more about Python, beyond the basic (but very helpful) stuff on codecademy. Is there room in this group for newbies to swing by and get some help from folks who actually know what they're on about?
