Re: [chess-304] Chess and Coffee - On Hold for the Holidays

Hi Tom,
I am sorry to hear that you want to step down as an organizer. I am offering to either help OR take over if you are really set on stepping down. The meetups are a lot of fun and I would not like to see it go "fizzle down and die."
A few logistics before I commit to taking over:
1) I will not be paying out of poker (I am not as generous as you) however I have ideas on how to collect.
    How much per year?
    When is the fee due?
2) For RSVP's it has to be made clear to the members that they have to RSVP. And then give them 3-chances, and then impose some consequence. It could be a fun consequence so people don't get scared and run off.
Sometimes it is easier to just show up and not get online to RSVP. A suggestion (as a fallback) would be for me to bring laptop to the meetups, log on, and have everyone present sign-in. This is allowing members to be lazy; however it might take care of the problem.
3) I do not know how to use the system. I'm sure it cannot be too hard; it's not nucular science. Regardles, any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Not meetup related:
I would like to return the poker table top to you before the holidays.
Let me know what would be a good time.
Mon - Fri your office is practically on my way home. Return time varies so I leave it up to you to pick a day. This week I can do it on Thursday.

p.s.  We could grab dinner one afternoon/evening and talk meetup business. More people can join if you have anyone in mind.

Hello everyone,

First of all, I just want to thank everyone for being a part of our chess and coffee meetup group. Over the past two years, we have grown to 159 members, had 103 meetups, and been consistently rated 5 stars by members.

I'm writing this message to let you all know that due to sparse attendance during the holidays, we will be putting the meetups on hold for a while.

Another issue on the table is the fact that I am considering stepping down as the organizer of the group. The meetup group has been costing me $12 a month to for the past two years ($288 total, so far), and I'm not sure how to make it so I'm not the sole person who's paying for all this. If I charge membership dues, I'm afraid the group would just fall apart, since everyone loves the fact that it's free. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

Another reason why I'm considering stepping down as the organizer is that I'm getting frustrated by the lack of RSVPs to the event. For the past 6 months, we have almost consistently had 8-12 people show up, but only 3-4 people ever RSVP each week. This has started to have a negative effect on the meetup group itself, and now less and less people seem to be showing up each week because they don't think anyone else is coming. This either has to turn around (people need to start actually posting their RSVP), or this group will inevitably completely fizzle out and die.

For now, let's just take a break from things for the holidays. Please email me if you have any ideas on how to solve the other issues, or if you are interested in taking over and becoming the organizer.
