I've always been drawn to the idea of co-housing, and what it can offer to those who are looking for more connectedness and support in their lives - but like many, I've never been able to afford the high buy-in cost of co-housing communities that consist of custom-built individual houses. As I look towards retirement (but not that far away), the idea of sharing community - in a way that people of ordinary means can afford! - appeals to me more and more. For our own sakes - and for the well-being of the Earth - it make so much sense to share the resources and the work of maintaining our homes and communities, and to be surrounded by neighbors we have come to know and trust through our shared life.
I've tried out intentional community that was more "commune-like" - and found it wasn't for me. I really like having a living space that's completely my own - but don't like how much work and expense is involved, doing it all on my own. I feel co-housing can offer the best of both worlds.
I am currently a home-owner, and am prepared to sell and invest in a community property at any time.
* Each housing unit be complete in itself and offer as much privacy and autonomy as members needed. * Regularly scheduled events to bring members together - shared meals, game nights, cultural programs, etc. * A common space for the above to happen - this might also include a lending library for books and videos, and other things of common use. * Shared outdoor spaces for gardening, childrens' play, etc. * Shared resources like tools, lawnmowers, etc. * A common fund for maintaining the infrastructure - snow plowing, the building systems, etc. * A set of agreements governing members' rights and obligations, including standards of mutual respect as well as the practical financial and maintenance needs.
My main interest is in serving the Earth and helping the world to move forward into greater awareness, creativity and harmony, in whatever way I can. Mostly, this means living my life in a way that embodies and expresses the world as I wish it to be.
This group has great potential! After just one meeting a sense of community is already starting to develop.
