Bitcoin Focus #2 in partnership with TechHub London

We're pleased to announce the agenda for November's Bitcoin Focus.

As before, we want these events to remain accessible to all. If you're a bitcoin noob then make sure you're there in time for our Bitcoin Bootcamp and we'll try to ensure that it includes some interesting content for the more experienced among you too.

A big thank you to our sponsors at TechHub, CoinDesk and Diacle for allowing us to keep these events free to attend and to keep the food and drink flowing.

Click through to their websites via their ads under "Our Sponsors" in the left hand column.

And, of course, thanks to our speakers for giving up their time and knowledge.

The Agenda for the evening will be:

////////////////////

5:45pm

Doors open and time to network

////////////////////

6:30pm

Welcome from our sponsors

////////////////////

6:40pm

Bitcoin Bootcamp

Presented this month by Hakim Mamoni of Dealco.in

Hakim will be presenting a layman’s account of the inner workings of the Bitcoin protocol and also discussing some of the many possible features and use-cases that it has the capacity to support in the years ahead.

Followed by Q&A’s

////////////////////

7:00pm

Bitcoin Mining - Bedroom to bank account

Presented by Edd Harpham

Edd will be giving an overview to bitcoin mining, what it is, and what it isn't. He'll describe some basic differences between the older ways of mining bitcoin vs the new dedicated technology and how you can still profit from bedroom mining. Theres even a guide on how to build your own miner and what sites you need to get started turning electricity into cash.

Followed by Q&A’s

////////////////////

7:25pm

Bitcoin in context, a brief cultural history of money

Presented by Lui Smyth, Anthropology researcher at UCL

Lui will examine different ways of understanding money, drawing examples from history and anthropology.  From gift economies through to gold, paper, plastic, and digital, he will explore the relationship between money systems and political power.

Followed by Q&A’s

////////////////////

7:50pm

Regulatory Update

Presented by compliance specialist Adam Vaziri of Diacle and media lawyer Eitan Jankelewitz

As it is our hope that our events will inspire more and more UK based start-ups, we intend to make this a regular feature so that Adam and Eitan can pass on the experiences of their existing bitcoin clients, discuss any significant regulatory changes and field questions from any would be bitcoin CEOs.

////////////////////

8:00pm

Final chance for Q&A’s with all our speakers and then back to networking over food and drinks.

  • Bobby M.

    Hi all,

    It was a really good event yesterday and an excellent turn-out. I had interesting conversations with many people. It was good to meet up with people I knew and also to get to know new members of the community. Thank you to Iain, Alex, Andrei, Christian, Darragh, John, Paul, and everyone else who helped organize it.

    I look forward to meeting up again this Saturday and discussing projects in more detail. I'm thinking about a couple right now and am keen to hear from others who can help or would like some help. My background is somewhere in the middle of finance and tech, leaning more towards finance.

    Also, I'm close to giving up the day job and getting more involved; so if the bitcoin community needs any help, please just ask!

    Have a good week!
    Bobby :)

    Hello. I want to buy bitcoins but have a few queries before.
    If i buy them is it secure on my laptop from hackers?
    If not what is the best alternative way of buying bitcoins?
    Secondly what is the best wallet to download? if i have different wallets will i still be able to access my bitcoins from them? For example if i have a bitcoin wallet on my laptop and another one on my phone, will i still be able to access my bitcoins from both?
    Very new to this so would appreciate some help.

    For all the excitement about Bitcoin, still only a handful of businesses, in London and the UK, accept it as payment for goods and services. And do any pay wages in Bitcoin? There is nothing approaching a circular flow of Bitcoin income, or anything resembling a Bitcoin real economy. Yet such economy can operate independently of the Sterling economy with huge advantages over it: freedom from the distortive and disruptive effect of the state’s power to print money and the banks’ power to create money just by saying it exists.

    Bitcoin is a bank-free, state-free currency. My ambition is to instil it with meaning and promissory force (the one property that it currently lacks), making it legal tender by contract (as opposed to state fiat).

    I look forward to networking with like-minded people and to develop, implement and promote systems for bringing Bitcoin into circulation.

      BIPS temporarily closes consumer wallet initiative after security breach
      To protect the successful merchant processing business BIPS has decided to temporarily close down its consumer wallet initiative.
      BIPS has been a target of a coordinated attack and subsequent security breached. Several consumer wallets have been compromised and BIPS will be contacting the affected users.
      As a consequence BIPS will temporarily close down the wallet initiative to focus on real-time merchant

      All existing users will be asked to transfer bitcoins to other wallet solutions, and users affected by the security breach will be contacted.
      Additional support information:
      BIPS help desk system is currently not accessible and will not be re-enabled until an alternative hosting solution has been arranged for this. In the mean time, support is reachable via email to support(at)bips(dot)me. Previously submitted tickets need to be resubmitted via email. Please be patient and allow 24-72 hours to receive a reply.

    If anyone in the group is interested in starting a Crowdfunding platform for Bitcoin like Kickstarter, then BitCrowdfund.com is up for sale.

    Chamath Palihapitiya one of the largest Silicon Valley investors with $5M in Bitcoin, believes Bitcoin could one day be worth $500k a Bitcoin! You have to understand the math behind this to foresee the feasibility. This is an exciting time to be alive as an entire Bitcoin Economy is evolving just like the internet itself right before our eyes. Amazing!

    Are 50 plus confirmations something normal when I move about US$10,000 in BTC? It has been 12 hours since I transferred that amount in BTCs and I am starting to panic!

      November 19, 2013

    • Jez S.

      after the first confirmation your money is safe and yours. the extra confirmations are just extra confirmation that its arrived but you don't need any after the 1st one. you get more confirmations every few minutes, until theres too many to bother reporting. you only care about the first one!

      Unfortunately it seems as though it's just gone up, but basically the price you see on the main page is indeed the price *per BTC*. You can of course buy less than 1 BTC if you like. Just make sure you have access to your online banking to make a bank transfer.
