ABOUT THIS SESSION:
Our 6pm (US EDT) talk on Thursday May 28 will be Bob Silverberg speaking on "Building An Object Oriented Model". More on that below.
I wanted to say while I have the chance that I do realize we've not had meetings for a couple of weeks. Speakers have fallen through, plus we had cf.objective() keeping many speakers busy, whether speaking or attending.
The good news is that I have quite a full slate of speakers over the next two months. So the "spring break" is over and "summer school" will soon be in session! :-) Now, on to Bob's talk...
TOPIC DESCRIPTION:
When making the move from a procedural to an object oriented approach one often comes across a pattern that involves using services and gateways to act as a middle man between a controller and your actual business objects. This session will present an approach to implementing a common set of services and gateways. Through the use of abstract classes you will see how to eliminate duplicate code and how
to encapsulate logic to increase the cohesiveness of your entire model. We will start with the basics, describing what services and gateways are, and then look at building a model from the ground up. You'll leave the session with an understanding of the components that go into building a model, as well as some of the object oriented principles that will help guide you in your design efforts.
This session is aimed at beginning to intermediate developers who have some experience with and knowledge of basic OO concepts and are interested in learning about some of the design considerations that go into building an OO model.
SPEAKER:
Bob Silverberg has been developing software for nearly twenty years, the past ten of which have been devoted to web application development with ColdFusion. He runs a small development company from his home in Toronto, where he divides his time between client work, open source development and taking care of his two young sons. He is an active participant on a number of ColdFusion mailing lists and blogs at www.silverwareconsulting.com.
RECORDING: As always, the meeting will be recorded, and the recording URL will be posted after the meeting at http://recordings.col....
PODCAST/DOWNLOADABLE RECORDINGS:
We will attempt to make this meeting available as a downloadable recording, which will be listed on the recordings page within a few days of the meeting.
LOGGING IN: When you login to the Connect room (the experts.acrobat.com/cfmeetup link above) to view the meeting, PLEASE USE THE "LOGIN AS GUEST" option, and USE YOUR NAME, but do NOT attempt to use your meetup.com username/password. The login screen presented there has no connection to meetup.com. And if you have a real Connect account, don't use that either. Just sign in as a guest. It's just not worthwhile try to add those who have real accounts to the participant list for each meeting. You have no fewer features as a guest as than you would if logging in with your own Connect account. Thanks.
RSVP, but only if coming: We appreciate folks RSVPing if they plan to come (using the link on this email or at the meetup site), though it's not mandatory and it's not a commitment. BTW, no need to RSVP if you can't make it nor even explain why you can't. With nearly 1,500 members, there's really no reason to explain your absence. :-)
FEEDBACK/MEETING DISCUSSION: We would appreciate your sharing your feedback after the meeting (via the follow-up email sent to members, or via a link on the site). Meetup.com also now offers a meeting-specific discussion area, available on each meeting event page, in addition to the feedback feature. Please feel free to have discussions there about the meeting's topic.
ADD THIS TO YOUR CALENDAR: If you would like to easily add this event to your own personal calendar, please note that the page for the event offers a link (on the right) saying, "Add this meeting to your calendar", which offers links to get calendar downloads for Outlook, iCal, Google, and Yahoo calendars.
