ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Our noon (US EDT) talk on Thursday June 11 will be yours truly, Charlie Arehart, speaking on "Introducing the Adobe ColdFusion Extensions for Eclipse".

TOPIC DESCRIPTION:

Whether you're already using Eclipse (via CFEclipse or not), or you've still not gotten into using it (or are waiting for Bolt), this talk if for you, if you don't know about the Adobe CF Extensions for Eclipse. Not to be confused with the CFEclipse plugin, the Adobe ColdFusion Extensions for Eclipse are a free set of very useful tools (for the free Eclipse editor) that many have missed, even if they do use CFEclipse. And if you don't yet use CFEclipse, these additional tools may offer features that might make you reconsider using Eclipse for CFML coding.

In this session, veteran CFer Charlie Arehart will introduce the extensions (not CFEclipse), including how to find and install the extensions from the Adobe site, as well how to use them to do many things: browse datasources and build queries, generate code using wizards, browse CFCs and web services, view log files, debug CF apps (discussed only briefly and supported only for CF8), and more.

Note that most of the features shown apply to if you're using CF7 as well. And since the upcoming new Adobe editor, codenamed Bolt, incorporates these same features (and many more, as discussed on the labs site), this talk will help you whatever your current or future plans.

SPEAKER:

A veteran ColdFusion developer and troubleshooter since 1997, Charlie Arehart is a longtime contributor to the community and a recognized Adobe Community Expert. He's now an independent consultant providing troubleshooting/tuning assistance and training/mentoring for CF teams of all sizes and experience levels (carehart.org/consulting). A certified Advanced CF Developer and Instructor for CF 4 thru 8, he also runs the Online ColdFusion Meetup (coldfusionmeetup.com, an online CF user group), the UGTV repository of recorded presentations from hundreds of speakers (carehart.org/ugtv), the CF411 site of several hundred tools/resources for CFers (cf411.com), and is a contributor to each of the 3-volume series ColdFusion 8 WACK books by Ben Forta. A member of the Adobe Customer Advisory Board for ColdFusion and with 26+ years in IT, he's frequently invited to speak to developer conferences worldwide.

RECORDING: As always, the meeting will be recorded, and the recording URL will be posted after the meeting at http://recordings.col....

Thanks, Ray & Jeffrey. I really appreciate the additional feedback. For those who wonder, the feedback on the right is meetup.com's official "feedback" mechanism. Those who RSVP to a meeting get an email asking for their feedback, which is shown there. This area here at the bottom of the page is open to anyone & also more conversational. For instance, you can only enter a single feedback comment on the right, but here I'm able to add this in addition to my reply on the right. More are welcome.

I had used the CF debugger a while ago and had totally forgot what to do with this. After watching your cf extensions video and this one https://admin.adobe.acrobat.... I am back to debugging. I do appreciate that you kept things focused on the topic at hand and would not let it stray. Very helpful that you offered many links that I used to research my problem and solve it. Thanks again. Thanks for your input with these presentations. Jeff Oliver

I really thought I had a firm idea of everything that was in the Adobe CF extensions. I'm glad I attended because I learned about a few things that I really had no idea were in the package. Thanks, Charlie!

Who attended?

  • 56 attendees
    •  I learned of some features that I didn't know were there before. It really was quite useful to have some time spent on these extensions as they really can make your development more productive. I think I will personally get some great use from the Services Browser.
    •  I learned quite a few things that I didn't know were possible.
    •  Sorry to hear from those who felt the preliminaries were needless. I've watched the recording: the demos did start at 35 minutes in, but what preceded was: :01-:05 Intro to topic :06-:08 Intro myself :08-:23 Audience, misconceptions, relation to other things :23-:30 Installing Eclipse, and the Extensions :30-:36 Understanding implications of RDS (to leverage most features) :36-:59 Demos :59-1:03 Learning more The first 3 could have been squeezed and will do if done again, but not 4th and 5th. Might have cut 10 minutes. Anyway, the goal was to make you aware of stuff. As for those annoyed by bullets becoming grayed out as we proceeded through a slide, that was somewhat intentional. I wanted you to focus on the new point. Others might put new points on separate slides, and once you left, they would be gone too. Anyway, I will take the feedback and make it less dim. Also note that the slides are available (as PDF, all text black) on my site: carehart.org/presentations/
    •  Not to be critical, but there were 40 minutes of intro and setup, then only ~20 minutes of content and examples. Just a thought... keep up the good work and appreciate the effort that goes into organizing the group and speakers. Thanks!
    •  Too many side thoughts I think. I think more info could have been conveyed if stayed on topic. I need more Eclipse topics. Especially in CF. This was a great start, thanx!
    •  Learned a lot - thanks, Charlie! It is so hard to learn all these things without help.
    •  I have been using CFEclipse for the past couple of years but still find myself being frustrated at times and going back to Dreamweaver. This presentation opened my eyes to the capabilities available that I did not know existed.
    •  There was a problem with the audio. It seemed to play what he was saying and what he said 10 seconds ago at the same time. Plus gaps in the audio at some points. Other than that it was a great presentation.
    •  Slides were bad: when the active black text was un-hilited, it went to a pale blue color of text that I could not read. It was invisible for all intents and purposes. Audio was bad: kept dropping out and missing parts of it. It took 50 min. to get to the "meat" of why I came. 25 min were preliminaries unrelated to the topic. Time was taken to talk about how to download and setup the plugin. I thought it was going to be about demoing the product and showing features of what it can do by example. I had 1 hr before I had to go to another meeting. I got 5-10 min. of substance before I had to leave. What a waste the other 50 minutes were. I don't use Eclipse and I was trying to decide if the feature and benefit gain was going to be worth the effort to switch from DW but I didn't get the answer I came for. So overall, this was a bad and nearly awful presentation from my perspective. Please respect our busy schedules more and get to the "meat" sooner.
    •  Great job - all your work is much appreciated. Just wish we could have gotten to the meat of it a little sooner as I watched it over lunch at work. Not too worried as its always available to watch later as well. Thanks too for that!
