ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Our 6pm (US ET) talk on Thursday Nov 5 will be Charlie Arehart presenting, "Hidden Gems in ColdFusion Builder".

TOPIC DESCRIPTION:

In this session, veteran CFer Charlie Arehart will share dozens of tips and tricks (and a couple of traps) for working with Adobe's new ColdFusion Builder IDE. Note that this talk is not a general introduction to the editor, but instead focuses on hidden gems.

Whether you're entirely new to CF Builder or have used it since its release, there will be items of interest for you. Of course, those with prior experience with CFEclipse will recognize some of the tips, but many if not most will be unique to CFBuilder, and even experienced CFEclipse users have said they learned things in this talk.

The topics will range from gems in editing code, to working with files, to configuring the IDE; from troubleshooting problems, to connecting the IDE to CF servers and editing code on remote servers, as well as miscellaneous gems, gotchas, and resources for learning more.
SPEAKER:

A veteran ColdFusion developer and troubleshooter since 1997 with over 25 years in IT, Charlie Arehart is a longtime contributor to the community and a recognized Adobe Community Expert. As an independent consultant, he provides short-term troubleshooting/tuning assistance and training/mentoring for organizations of all sizes and CF experience levels (carehart.org/consulting). Besides running the 2000-member Online ColdFusion Meetup (coldfusionmeetup.com, an online CF user group), he also hosts the UGTV repository of recorded presentations from hundreds of speakers (carehart.org/ugtv) and the CF411 site of over 1000 tools/resources for CFers (cf411.com). A certified Advanced CF Developer and Instructor for CF 4 thru 8, Charlie's spoken at each of the major CF conferences worldwide and is a contributor to all three volumes of Ben Forta's ColdFusion 8 and 9 WACK books.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Our noon (US ET) talk on Thursday Nov 5 will be Brian Meloche presenting, "LightFront: Go From Zero to Hero in 60 Minutes or Less".

TOPIC DESCRIPTION:

You may not have heard of LightFront yet. It's a new MVC framework for ColdFusion - http://lightfront.riaforge.org/. It's a pragmatic framework designed with a combination of computer science, street smarts and fundamentals. Unlike all the other MVC frameworks, LightFront is designed to be easy to understand and simple to use. This framework is simple enough that a junior developer can pick it up.

After attending this session, you will literally know everything there is to know about LightFront, and, if you follow along, you can have a small LightFront application built at the end of this session. I know, I know, it sounds crazy... but trust me, you'll be able to do this in under an hour. Just download a copy of LightFront and install it at your webroot... and we'll get you going by the end of the session.

There's more to LightFront than that... but you'll have to wait until the meetup to find out... unless you go to http://lightfront.riaforge.org/ to find out more before then.

SPEAKER:

A veteran ColdFusion developer since 1998, Brian Meloche is a longtime contributor to the Adobe/Macromedia/Allaire community. He's probably best known within the ColdFusion community as the producer and host of the CFConversations podcast. He has been an Adobe Community Expert in ColdFusion since 2007. He's been involved in user groups since 2003. He is the co-founder and current manager of the Cleveland ColdFusion User Group. He is the founder and is both the former manager and co-manager of the Cleveland Adobe Users Group (formerly the Cleveland Macromedia Users Group). He is also the founder and was the original manager of the the West Virginia Macromedia User Group, now called KVWILD. He has also been involved in several efforts to help bring the user group communities closer together, and has mentored several user group managers get their groups going. Brian has also written several articles for the ColdFusion Developer's Journal and Fusion Authority.

A Windsor, Ontario, Canada native, Brian moved to the U.S. in 2000 late in the dot-com boom, and survived the dot-com bomb, working as a consultant at various companies throughout the mid-west and Southern U.S. Since 2004, Brian has worked at a successful wholesaler in Cleveland, where he was recently promoted to the position of Senior Technical Analyst. Brian has been involved in several large enterprise web projects using ColdFusion. Brian lives in Cleveland with his wife, Julie, as well as several dogs and cats they have rescued.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Our 6pm (US ET) talk on Thursday Oct 29 will be Doug Boude presenting , "Adobe Fireworks CS4 for Interface-Driven CF Development".

TOPIC DESCRIPTION:

In this presentation, Doug Boude will demonstrate the use of Adobe Fireworks CS4 as the primary tool in an interface driven approach to application development. In it, you will be shown some fundamental Fireworks design functionality and the options Fireworks provides for turning your static designs into interactive prototypes and highly usable html. "Scope Creep" is an old enemy of the typical development lifecycle, but taking the approach of designing the final product *first* can help alleviate if not eliminate that foe altogether!

SPEAKER:

Doug Boude (rhymes with 'loud') is the Senior Developer for Mason Catastrophe Claims Services based in the quaint hamlet of Boerne, Texas. He has been in the IT industry since 1992, hung ten on the first internet wave when it came his way in 1996, and has been crafting web based solutions with Coldfusion since version 4.0. His super powers include most any flavor of SQL, Javascript, Ajax, VB, and OOP with Coldfusion.

Some fun facts about Doug:
· He was organically grown in the wooded farmlands of north central Missouri;
· At the age of 19 he joined the Air Force, moved to the Great State of Texas, and disarmed bombs for the military and Secret Service for the next 5 years;
· He has reproduced 7 times (one of those being a clone), inherited 4 step kids, has one grandchild, and a new baby of his own on the way;
· Is and has always been an autodidact;
· Harbors a great appreciation for the processes of anaerobic respiration and distillation;
· Was born in the sign of water on a frigid Sunday morning in 1966;
· Is greatly intrigued by human language and makes it a point to learn at least a pinch of as many as possible;
· Is an outdoorsman who is more at home trapping beaver in the frozen woodlands than anywhere else;
· Tends to be much more of an "arthropod man" than a cat or dog man (which is why I LOVED "District 9"!!);
· Oh, and he adores solving problems of all kinds!
Doug blogs at www.dougboude.com, is on Facebook at facebook.com/dougboude, twitters at dougboude, (seeing a pattern here?) and chats on Digsby and gtalk at dougboude as well.

ABOUT THIS SESSION:

Our 6pm (US ET) talk on Thursday Sep 24 will be Sidney Maestre presenting , "Mango Blog Skinning Start to Finish".

TOPIC DESCRIPTION:

Mango Blog is an open source blogging engine. You can customize the look through downloadable "themes". This presentation will focusing on taking a WordPress theme and adapting it for use in Mango Blog. Our focus will be the mango tags and mango extra tags used in themes. The techniques in this presentation can also be applied to your own designs as well. http://www.mangoblog.org/

SPEAKER:
Sid Maestre
sid.maestre@designovermatter.com

Graduating with a History degree I never thought I'd have a career in programming. I discovered ColdFusion in 1998 (version 3.1) and was immediately impressed with the power of a few simple tags. I've done consulting over the years through my company design over matter. I also worked for roundpeg consulting in 2000-2002.

I joined the Bay Area ColdFusion User Group as co-manager in July 2008 and became the manager in April 2009.

Follow me on Twitter at "SidneyAllen".

When I'm not coding you'll find me playing with my two daughters Madeleine (age 4) and Olivia (21 months). Those rare moments I get for myself are spent mountain biking, snowboarding or running.
