Sorry, I should have included my Daily Camera letter to the editor in my email:

Say no to eating animals

I try to support the accomplishments of women even when I disagree with their views, and Temple Grandin's recent induction into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame is no exception.

However, lest we forget (while salivating over the thought of holiday turkey, beef, pork, lamb and fish), regardless of what method is used to force innocent animals to slaughter -- and the majority of animal slaughter in this country is heinously cruel to the point of being ghoulish -- the end result is the same.

"Improved" herding methods, for a cow, is like being calmed when told you are just going to the showers, only to find yourself in an inescapable gas chamber. A shocking comparison?

At this holiday season, a projected 65 million turkeys (up to 300 million annually) and millions of other animals who are the victims of a multi-billion dollar animal food/factory farming industry will be killed, largely inhumanely (some cut to pieces while they are still conscious), to satisfy the seasonal appetites and sentimental holiday attachments of human beings.

At this season of abundance -- of compassion -- please say no to eating animals. Make it your holiday gift to the environment (animal farming is reportedly the largest contributor to global warming, even above automobile emissions) and to human health.

Make it your holiday gift to the lamb you have placed in the manger beside the baby Jesus; to the turkey you recognize as a representation of American freedom and friendship; to the pig whose stories of innocence and bravery you read to your children at bedtime; to the enslaved, commodified cow who is, in fact, not saved from an unthinkably horrible fate by new methods of feeding or herding, and will never be inducted into any Hall of Fame.
