Camping & Hiking in Tennessee + Visit Nashville - April 26-28

  • April 26, 2013 · 9:00 AM

3 day camping/hiking/Nashville trip.

Suggested Itinerary:

April 26-28

Friday, April 26 @ 9am: Meet at carpool & leave Columbus - (There will be other unofficial carpools later in the day... Communicate on the COA site to make plans with other interested carpoolers)

Friday, @ 2:30pm: Arrive at Cedars of Lebanon State Park, set up camp.

Friday @ 6:30pm: (Option) Carpool to Downtown Nashville: Sightseeing, Visit the Honky-tonks, live music, souvenir shops, restaurants.

Friday @ 10:30: Drive back to camp

Saturday, April 27 @ 8am: Drive to Virgin Falls
Saturday @ 10am-3pm: Hiking at Virgin Falls (Pack a lunch)
Saturday at 3pm: Drive back to Cedars of Lebanon

Saturday at 5pm: Eat, Shower, Camp, have fun.

Saturday: evening (Driving to Nashville is an option for those who aren't too tired from the hike) I think that most would prefer to hang out and relax after such a strenuous hike.

Important Links:
Cedars of Lebanon State Park

Virgin Falls Hiking

Camping with the group in Cedars of Lebanon State Park would be a must for people interested in this trip. An alternative option might be to call and see if cabins are available at Cedars of Lebanon. I have not called to check & I don't really intend to since I will be camping. If you wish to do so, you can call the reservation # at[masked] to see if there are any weekends in April where the cabins are available to rent.

This will be "car camping", which means you are sleeping in a tent, but your car is 20 feet away. FYI: The sites do have electricity and water hookups.

Making reservations: Individuals would be responsible for reserving their own campsite. The sites are $20 per night for 2 nights, and you would be able to share the cost with another person or two that you trust to share with.

Here is the Cedars of Lebanon website for reserving campsites - https://tnstateparks.itinio.com/cedars-of-lebanon

Trip Options:
10 mile strenuous hike at Virgin Falls. The trailhead is a 2 hour drive one way from Cedars of Lebanon. The hike will take approx 5 hours. The return trip would also take 2 hours. If you aren't sure if you can hike 10 miles and keep a decent pace, I would ask that you choose another option.

Honky-Tonkin'/sight-seeing in Nashville.

Campground Policies

Please note that check-in time for camping is 4:00 pm. Check-out time is 3:00 pm.

Camping rates are for up to 4 persons per site. Additional fees apply to more than 4 persons.

Campground Reservation Policies

Campsite fees are fully refundable for cancellations made before one day prior to arrival date. There is a non-refundable $3.00 Advanced Reservation Fee per campsite that provides for managing advanced reservations at Tennessee State Parks.

Cancellations made within 1 day of arrival date forfeit the first nights' campsite fee and reservation fee. Without prior arrangements, guests that do not occupy their reserved site by 12:00 noon the day following the first nights' reservation will forfeit all fees and the reserved campsite may become available for other guests. If you do not intend to occupy a reserved site on the first reserved night, contact the park so that we can hold the site for you

Costs & Travel time:
I created a basic template to give you an idea how much the trip could cost if you plan ahead and try to do the trip inexpensively... I'm not great at math, so double-check it for yourself, but if you could carpool with 2 others in a vehicle that gets 25mpg, share the gas costs, and also share a campsite with those 2 people, this could be a basic idea how how much the trip could cost, before food, drinks, souvenirs, or anything else that you might buy while you are in town. This also does not account for the food that you would need while camping, which will most likely be up to individuals to bring with them, and prepare for themselves.

Anyways, here's the math...

Cedars of Lebanon State Park to Virgin Falls Trailhead one way = 93 miles
@ 25 MPG = 3.72 Gallons of gas x $4 per gallon = $14.88  / 3 people per car = $5
x2 (round trip) = $10
1 hour & 49 minutes one way

Columbus, OH to Cedars of Lebanon State Park = 410 Miles 1 way
@ 25 mpg = 16.4 Gallons of gas x $4 per gallon = $65.60 / 3 people = 21.86 per person
x2 (round trip) = $44
6 hours & 22 minutes 1 way

Cedars of Lebanon to Nashville = 34 miles 1 way
@25mpg = 1.36 gallons of gas x $4 per gallon = $5.44 / 3 people = 2 per person
x2 round trip = $4 = $5 parking per person = $9
43 Minutes one way

Camping = $20 per night x 2 = $40 / 3 people = $14

$10 + 44 + 9 + 14 = $77 Total before additional expenses.
You would need to pay your driver & your campsite mates for these expenses, and they may vary depending on how many people you have in your vehicle & how fuel efficient their vehicle is. The organizer will not be taking any money directly for the cost of this trip.

April is a nice time to visit Tennessee. The average temperatures are usually about 5-10 degrees warmer there, and hopefully the rain will stay away. The trip is just over 6 hours one way.

Please keep your RSVPs updated, and only RSVP yes is you are seriously interested.

Just posted a bunch of pix. I liked Dave's cave pictures better than mine though. And I am glad no one posted picture of me with my mouth hanging open as I was sleeping!

For anyone who has never been to downtown Nashville, the place to hang out is at the intersection of Broadway St and 2nd Ave, and then walk from there, down either street. Both are fun, but Broadway is the main drag. There are many fun places to go for free and watch music & grab a beer. Your carpool will need to find a place to park near that area. You can either pay for a garage or just find a free place to park & then walk a few blocks. Be sure to have everyone else's phone numbers so that you can meet up when you arrive.

Having your phone number is enough, right? Oak will be arriving tonight and I will arrive early tomorrow morning. We're probably just gonna chill in Nashville until we hear you guys are within an hour of the campgrounds so we can set up along with everyone else. Can you have someone in your car call/text one of us when you are about an hour from the campgrounds?

Teja, Tiffany & Vivek.... I would definitely consider renting a car from enterprise. Their weekend specials are awesome I just googled "Enterprise Weekend special"... There were deals on cars from $9.99 per day, if anyone is willing to do that.

Thanks for the info but I've decided it's too far and I should be responsible and prepare for my lecture I have to give next week. Have a great time! Hopefully I can come on the next camping trip!

I am going to have to cancel this weekend due to some pressing matters that need to be addressed. Does anyone want to take over my reservation for campsite 102 in Area #3? The total is $48.70 but I’d be willing to take a little less for it.

    David,

Hey! Which route are you guys taking from Columbus to TN? Who is carpooling together? I'm trying to figure out a way for me to catch a carpool if anyone has extra space...from Marietta, it would take me through Lexington. If I can't find a carpool then I probably won't go because a 7.5 hr drive is way too long to do alone...

    April 24, 2013

    • Tiffany

Michelle, thanks for the suggestion but I live in the boondocks and there's not really any big cities close enough to me that would make it worth it for me to drive to then catch a bus...

      April 25, 2013

    • David

It looks like Vivek & Teja aren't able to make it since their carpool fell through... Now they don't have a ride. I guess there would be the option of a weekend car rental from an enterprise. The weekend specials are usually a decent deal if divided up between 3 or 4 people.

I've got campsite 102 reserved. I have room for 3 more if anyone want to share.

    April 18, 2013

    • Reem

Hi Paul is it possible we share with you ? ( 2 of us)

      April 18, 2013

    • Tiffany

Paul, if I find someone who would be willing to pick me up in Lexington, could I share your campsite with you?

      April 22, 2013

  • Tiffany

Hey! I'm thinking about coming to this but don't have a tent. Does anyone have extra space in their tent?

Also, I will be coming from Marietta and don't want to drive down the whole way by myself. Is anyone gonna be driving through Lexington? If so, would you mind picking me up? I will give you gas money!

David: could you please post what you discussed at the planning meeting? Thanks!

    April 18, 2013

    • David

Tiffany, Oak says that he can bring an extra tent for you. He is traveling down on Thursday though to pick another person up. He won't be arriving at the campground until Friday though. Please let me know if you are definitely going down. I will relay the message to him.

      April 20, 2013

    • Tiffany

David, thanks for the offer but I found a tent to borrow.

I see Reem can't go anymore...anyone else have extra room in their car and willing to pass through Lexington to pick me up? Pretty please...

Just FYI: The people leaving Columbus on Friday morning, will be setting up camp in the afternoon and chilling out for a few hours at the site, then traveling into Nashville (leaving the campground around 6:30 or so) If you are leaving Cbus much after noon, you might arrive at the campground after our 6:30 departure into town... That being said, there are a couple of options for meeting up with us in downtown Nashville...

    April 20, 2013

    • David

      2. Go straight into Nashville, text (or call) us, hang out downtown, then head to the campground after Nashville, and set up camp in the dark.

I am open to sharing a site with anyone. I am trustworthy. I think I have a picnic tent but its a little bulky. I work a third shift and get off around 6:30 AM..I don't see a problem with meeting up at 9 AM to carpool.

How many can stay at one campsite? I see there are others ready to reserve, I am prepared to reserve one, but I am curious how many One site will accommodate. I don't have any guests to bring with me and that is why I am asking.

I am kind of looking forward to going now. I wish the weather would have been better earlier this year. I read gas meters for about 8 months and walked all over Columbus...This will be a great way to put all that in the past!!!

Looks like a good way to start off camping season! I've got an F-150 with super cab so I could take four, but at 17.5 mpg gas will cost a bit more than a prius!
