This will be a relatively short overnight backpacking trip for anyone who wants to get acclimated to the backpacking experience. If you need experience for upcoming backpacking trips, if you'd like to try out your new gear, or if you just plan to join us for an adventure, this is a good trip for that.

(FYI: This is not a backpacking class.  You should do research on your own ahead of time or visit a local outdoor shop if you need backpacking instruction)

COA (The Columbus Outdoor Adventurers) organizers may be planning longer backpacking trips later this summer, so if are planning on joining us for one of those trips, but you don't have much backpacking experience, you should probably join us for a shorter overnight trip like this one.

Time: Leave Columbus at 10:00am on Saturday
Return: Sunday Afternoon/Evening

To go backpacking you need to have a backpack that will carry your tent, your food, your water, your clothes, your sleeping bag, & any other gear that you might need. These items could weigh anywhere from 25-50 lbs depending on how you pack.  everything that you need to survive for these 24 hours in the woods you will need to bring with you to the trip and carry 10 miles in your backpack. If you don't have access to most or all of these items, you should probably not attend. If you aren't sure how backpacking works, you should attend a backpacking clinic before you attempt a backpacking trip. We want to make sure that everyone is safe and prepared for this trip before we leave.

It looks like we are going to get some rain overnight but things should clear up by time we are supposed to get out on the trail. There is a slight chance of rain predicted on Saturday night too, but it doesn't look too bad. Please update your RSVP by midnight tonight if the rain has changed your plans at all. I'm still up for going if everyone else still is.

I'm in as long as it doesn't rain like today, which it looks like it will clear.

I found out my daughter is coming back early this weekend. Which is great for me, but that means no first backpacking trip. :(

Any movement in the waiting list?? I can bring my car if that helps in moving the waiting list .

Unfortunately, the limit for backpackers is actually 6. That is mandated by the park rules, not ours. So we will already have to split in two. We've never actually gone over the 6 person limit before, so this will be a new experience for our group.

So last night my daughter and I were wrestling and she fell on my second toe and broke it. As much as I want to, I can barely walk up and down stairs, let alone an 11 mile hike. :( Hope everyone has a great time.

I've been practicing with a full pack and I need more prep before I do this - hopefully someone can jump in from the waitlist.

    Anyone considering sharing camp stoves?

I was actually just thinking about this. I have a one-burner propane stove, some cooking gear, and a light but spacious 3-person tent so I'd be happy to share the load (and equipment) with others.
