FYI: This trail can be strenuous and slippery in icy conditions!
Winter is a great time to visit the Old Man's Cave/Cedar Falls area. Depending on weather conditions leading up to the day, the ice formations can be awesome, so bring a camera!
You should dress for the weather, and bring water and a snack - these hikes always take longer than you think due to the up and down parts. Some parts are strenuous and the ice can make for slippery footing, so please consider your physical capabilities before signing up. I'm serious - last year was so icy there were parts where we could barely move!
I'm going to invest in some of those Ice Cleat boot covers you just slip on over your shoes - there are a number of brands out there (e.g. Yaktrax, Get-A-Grip, etc.) Something to consider - then we will be better Ice Hikers. We will plan to hike Old Man's Cave, then take the Buckeye/Grandma Gatewood trail to the bottom of Cedar Falls, then go up to the top of Cedar Falls and take the Gorge Overlook trail back.
Total distance around 6 miles.
We will meet at the Giant Eagle in the SE part of town at 9:30am for carpooling purposes. The trip from there should take about 1 hour 15 minutes. Click here for directions.
If you plan to go straight there, meet before 11:00am at the Old Man's Cave trailhead by the Welcome Center/bathroom area. After we'll hit up the local BBQ place for some well-deserved food! It's very easy to find, on our way back to 33 on 664, just before 33 there is a road that runs parallel to 33. Turn left on this road (Lake Logan Rd), and then the first right on Grey St to the Millstone BBQ: Click here for Directions... millstonebbq.com
