Hi Eveyone,
In our next session your fellow meetup composer, Bjorn Roche, will guide us through an issue that many of us confront all the time when recording our work, digital recording.
Let's get digital
Despite the retro popularity of analog processing gear, synthesizers and even vinyl, digital recording equipment is now standard fare. While good digital gear in the hands of the right engineer sounds great, not everyone has the gear or the know-how.
We will start with a brief theoretical discussion of the differences between analog and digital gear and the practical implications of those differences. We will also discuss the main type of processing and give general tips on usage, and then give you a chance to ask questions. Along the way, the presentation will answer questions like, How do you get the most out of your digital gear? What gear is really worth your hard earned money?
Bjorn Roche has consulted with Indaba Music, Sterling Sound, and others. He has led the development of two DAWs ("digital audio workstation"), including the first browser-based DAW that could record uncompressed audio while playing back as well as supporting real-time effects. He is a major contributor to PortAudio, a portable audio I/O library. He is currently developing a DAW called Xonami which allows musicians to collaborate in real-time from anywhere on the globe.
The meetup will be divided in two, taking a break after Bjorn’s presentation to give you a chance to discuss and network with your fellow musicians. In the second part we will focus on playing and/or performing your music.
If you are a newcomer and want to play your music, the easiest way is to bring an iPhone/iPod-type device, or a CD of some of your tracks, which can be played, through our laptop and/or monitors.
Try to keep your selections down to a total of 5 minutes or so.
If you want to perform live, that is great! There is an upright piano that is decent. If you need amplification, bring your own small amp. There is a large screen TV and DVD player for videos, as well.
If you have any questions, performance-based, tech, or otherwise, please feel free to drop me an e-mail.
The Tada Theater is in Chelsea at 15 West 28th Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue—very easy to get to.
You west-siders can take the 1 train to 28th Street and walk a few blocks east. And, the R and W local trains stop just a few hundred feet from the building entrance.
Tada is on the uptown side of 28th Street. The building entrance is next to a parking lot in the middle of the block.
If coming by car, you can park free on the street after 7pm.
See you then!
