Small Discussion Group ~ Gun Violence and the Humanist Response

In the United States, firearms cause about 30,000 deaths per year.

Humanism Manifesto III states: "Life's fulfillment emerges from
individual participation in the service of humane ideals".

What should humanists do about those 30,000 deaths?

We start the meeting at 7:00 and discussion usually gets started at 7:15. We usually finish around 8:30.

It sounds hard to come up with a Humanist position to me. My gut says that most Humanist positions start with a scientific view or analysis and add a Humanistic form of morality (is there a word for that?) to that. While 30,000 deaths is a problem (cars kill about the same), the other side is fear of some type -- of neighbors, of crime, of government, of loss of recreation. Should be an interesting conversation and perhaps hard to find a hard answer.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
