My my, what a year it’s been! Join us Friday, October 23rd to celebrate NWC’s first year of coworking and to explore what’s in store for the future.

One year of coworking and more

It's been a busy 12 months, both inside and outside of NWC:

We've made a lot of good friends. To the tune of 77 members throughout the year, 43 active members as of today, and dozens of visitors passing through from all corners of the world.

We helped make a lot of good things happen. On top of the great projects and products NWC members have developed over the course of the last year, some of which are highlighted below, we've also been home to the planning of BarCampNYC4, LaidOffCampNY, FashionCamp, OneWebDay, CultivateNY, the Breakout Festival, BigAppsDevCamp, Swagapalooza, and more. Our latest experiment is in CoStructure, where we work together to bring more sanity to our overworked lives.

We hosted a lot of good events. 22, to be exact, in our main Coworking NYC Meetup Group, which has blossomed to over 550 members. On top of that, we kicked off the Runway Project Meetup and helped hundreds of newfound independents get started on working for themselves over the course of 13 volunteer-led brainstorming and educational events. We've also been home to several other Meetups, including the Open Government Meetup, the Math Club Meetup, the Social Causes/Social Media Meetup, Groovy Grails Meetup and more. We also organized two fantastic TEDxNWC events, where some of NYC's greatest minds got together to discuss creating a better future.

We had a lot of good times. Between Coworking After Hours, TechDrinks, some impromptu bouts of Beatles Rock Band, lunch outings and more, we've all had plenty of good times in between getting things done.

That's a whole lot of good.

As we go, New Work City is going to continue to grow and evolve. As the past year's activities have made clear, NWC is far more than just a place to work-- it's a growing, thriving community of incredible people, and we as a collective group are going to work together to find new ways to help each other.

Member Launch Party
NWC’s members have been hard at work, and on 10/23 we’ll showcase their awesome stuff:

Perpetually
Darrell Silver presents TechCrunch50 finalist Perpetually.com, which lets you archive sites and go back in time to see how they’ve evolved over time. It’s like the Wayback Machine on steroids on a healthy diet and exercise!

Bundl.it
If you’ve ever wanted to send a batch of links in Twitter or elsewhere, but found that sending all those links was too onerous, you can use Sara Chipps’ Bundl.it to create a really simple package of links, and get a short URL to direct people to a simple and elegant list of those links.

The Circuit
Mark Burstiner, the NYC tech scene’s de facto event video streamer, steps in front of the camera for a show about the awesomest things happening on the web.

YCharts
Punch in a stock ticker symbol and be treated to an array of visualizations of that stock’s activities, in ways you won’t see on any other site. Ara Anjargolian will be on hand to show it off.

RedRover
Kevin Prentiss’s RedRover helps new college students connect to each other through shared interests—sort of like what those cheesy ice breakers were supposed to do, but this actually works, is online, and is not cheesy.

Maybe A Secret New Announcement From Tony

Hello coworkers!

It has once again been far too long since the last fabulous TechDrinks!

I hope you've had an awesome summer... let's take one last chance to drink outdoors before it gets too chilly and meet at the brand-new, super beautiful Studio Square beer garden in Astoria!

Yes, you read that right.... Astoria!

Never fear, Manhattanites, it's two short blocks from your NRW and V trains. The G train, too, if that's how you roll.

This place features a HUGE outdoor space, a healthy indoor space as well in case of rain, lots of fabulous and surprisingly affordable beers, and a variety of delicious German sausages.

It is a kickass TechDrinks venue.

See you there!

What's up everyone!

It's time for a very special edition of TECHDRINKS XII!!

We once again have much to celebrate:
-- Summer is finally here!
-- We are, for the first time, trying a NEW venue: Fat Cat on Christopher Street!
-- NWC just launched new membership plans and we want to welcome our new members!
-- We're wishing Tony a bon voyage for his Whuffaoke trip; see details below!

Fat Cat is Awesome
Fat Cat is an incredibly unique spot for a fun gathering in the city, and a short walk from New Work City.
-- Various games for rent, including ping pong, pool, shuffleboard, scrabble, and chess
-- A great beer selection including Delirium Tremens on tap
-- $3 PBRs
-- Live music including jazz trios, gospel choirs, and more!

Whuffaoke Across America
Join us in celebrating the launch of Whuffaoke Across America. An evening of celebration with Tony Bacigalupo on the eve of his "sold out" Whuffaoke tour across America with friends Tara Hunt, Alex Hillman, Emma Persky, and Ridley the Pug. Tony and crew are loading up an RV with a karaoke machine — complete with costumes and stage — and venturing across America, starting in San Francisco and ending in Montreal.

The plan is to stop at 13 cities and have a meetup with karaoke, book signings, awesome conversations and a great deal of fun. Every second of the trip will be live streamed (from the cab and the karaoke stage) on Justin.tv and totally interactive on the web as well at all locations. They’ll be tweeting, blogging, uploading photos and getting all sorts of press along the way.

Check out futuristic tangible digital interfaces for music, motion, art, and the Web, using tagged physical objects, augmented reality, and motion tracking technology. Or, if you’re brave enough, make your own - joining hackers around the world.

What:
A global hackday for tangible interfaces, computer vision, and creative use of OSC/LusidOSC, featuring the open-source, free, multi-platform Trackmate project developed at the MIT Media Lab

When:
Saturday, June 6, 11:00am - 9:30pm Eastern time (GMT-4)
- Hacking 11-7 for coders and makers
- Party 7-9:30 for everyone

Why Internet Week New York:
A week-long festival celebrating NYC’s Internet industry, in the home city of CDM and New Work City

Where (physical):
In NYC’s SoHo at the coworking space New Work City (directions), in-person hacking and a party for everyone

Where (virtual):
Around the world with interested inventors, musicians, visualists, makers, and technologists like you, with live text chat, video streams, and shared code, with NYC as the hub of work all around the planet all week. Join in as an individual or at a hacklab event; stay tuned here for details.

More details:
In an open hackday for coders and makers, we expand the notion of digital software interfaces into the three-dimensional physical world. Using tangible objects and webcam tracking, we’ll work with the open-source Trackmate project and LusidOSC framework developed by the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab. We’ll experiment with new interfaces for music, live and interactive visuals, and the Web, as hackers attending try their own hardware and software projects. By the end of the day, we should have a collection of tangible interface projects. Participants should have a background in Java or Processing; for the complete project, check our site for a required bill of materials.

During the day, we’ll get together and make interfaces. Then, everyone will be welcome to come check out the results and learn how to make their own projects at a party in the evening. We’ll have live music and visual play with the new interfaces, plus a bit of Guitar Hero / music games to blow off steam.

Live global hacking: 11a-7p (arrive promptly for a quick mini-workshop / demo)
Party: 7-9:30p

Hosted with the websites createdigitalmusic.com and createdigitalmotion.com, which will provide online tutorials and Internet chat/video participation for creative hackers worldwide.
