  • Some of us are old enough to remember dinosaurs, but most of us have never seen dinosaur tracks. This tour is an excellent opportunity to see such tracks along with rock art and historical sites in a unique part of Colorado without having to hike for miles. We will be traveling on roads that are only accessible to Forest Service vehicles, and the longest hike is 1/4 of a mile.

We will meet at the Target off I-25 and Circle/Lake to carpool. We will leave at 6 a.m. sharp to drive to the Forest Service office in La Junta, where we will depart for the tour at 8 a.m. If you choose to drive yourself or stay the night before in La Junta, make sure you meet us at the Forest Service office by 8. The address is 1420 East Third Street,
    La Junta, CO 81050

The tour lasts until 4 p.m. You should bring your lunch, snacks and plenty of water as well as appropriate clothing for any weather conditions. I will bring a cooler to store items for people that need to be kept cool. I would suggest that others do the same so we can accommodate everyone.

The tour makes 5 stops at various locations, and there will be plenty of time at each location for photography.

Four-wheel-drive vehicles are needed for this tour. If you have a 4WD vehicle and would like to volunteer to drive, please state so in the comments section.

Children are allowed on the tour, but pets are not unless they are service animals. If you are bringing family members or other guests, please add them to your RSVP.

The Forest Service refund policy is as follows: If you need to cancel, refunds (minus permit fees) will be given up to 2 weeks prior to the tour. Refunds will not be given for cancelations within 2 weeks of the tour.

RSVPing on Meetup does not secure your reservation for the tour, but you will need to RSVP on Meetup as well as through the US Forest Service. All spots must be paid for in advance and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please follow these instructions for making your reservations:

    1. Click this link and read all of the information:

I was hoping that our government officials would get their act together by now so we could go on this trip, but unfortunately the Forest Service will not be operating this tour, and we have to cancel.

I'll try to schedule it again sometime.

I was unable to reserve through the link. I want to go if possible and would leave from Pueble if anyone from here needs a ride. I would need a 4-wheel ride when we get there.

I am assuming that it will be cancelled since the Govt has not started back up yet. Hope they will reschedule though....?

Hi...Just tried to register via the link above and it is "closed" due to the government shut down. Should I go ahead and respond via MeetUp that I'm going...or what? Please advise.

You need to be on the Meetup RSVP list so I can notify you if the hold is lifted by the government.

Thanks, I did RSVP on Meetup.

I went to the link for forest service and can't make reservation there, as the web site is closed. So will check back later to RSVP if it opens. We spent the last five days in Moab and were unable to use any of the national parks. (:-(

I just got a phone call and if the Gov't does not get back to running, this tour is cancelled. :( Guess we will just have to wait and see!

Got the same call this morning. They said if the shutdown ends soon enough they'll put it back on.

I've been to Picket Wire Canyon many times over the years and have explored the area extensively. Nature Photographer magazine published an article I wrote about the area in their Apr/May 1998 edition. I'd be happy to bring a couple copies of the NP article for you all to read on the drive down.
I don't have a four-wheel drive vehicle so I will need to carpool with someone who does. My booking process is complete so I'm in. Thanks for the heads up on this tour. I'm certain everyone involved will have a terrific time. To get to the long set of dino tracks we will have to wad across the Purgatory River so be prepared. It is not a difficult wade but can be slippery, so you may want to bring a ski pole for stability.
