Car shoot with light painting

  • Dec 1, 2012 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Type of Class: Creative Lighting

Level of difficulty: Beginner/Intermediate

Equipment needed: A camera, a tripod, light source(s)

So this is an interactive shoot where we are going to "tinker" with lights and figure out how to use them to light up a car and its owner.

Bring your cameras and any lights you might want to "tinker" with. It could be speedlights, flashlights or even glow sticks. Any type of light source will do. I will have a couple speedlights on hand and a flashlight.

The owners of the cars have graciously donated their and their car's time so a model release will be signed by them. You, the photographer, will not get a copy of the release until I or the owner confirms that they've received at least 3 post processed images from you.

Bring warm clothes because it might be a tad bit nippy outside. Dark clothes are best but warmth is more important. If the clothes aren't dark then you'll just need to move faster when painting with light. :)

If you have something better to do (i.e. paid shoot, night out, etc) then please don't RSVP "yes" for this meetup. If you change your RSVP to "no" less than 48 hours before the meetup without contacting the organizer then you will be considered a no show and removed from the group. If you no show and don't contact the organizer within 48 hours then you will be removed from the group.

Hope to see a few of you there. :)

I had a lot of trouble with sharp focus throughout the image. The spot where I focused came out sharp, but other areas blured. Did anyone else have this problem? Thank you to Paul for setting up the shooot. The car owners for bringing out their very cool rides and of course Mandalyn for great work. Still got a few shots I like.

I had that issue too David. I think it could've been from the way the light reflected off the surface from different angles.

I know the car was steady and the camera was steady so the only thing that would explain it is the light reflecting off the car from different angles hitting the sensor making it seem like the same spot reflected the light different ways. If that makes any sense hehe.

    Lots of fun. Challenging.

Paul always comes up with some cool ideas for meet ups. I've tried light painting before but nothing like this. Anytime you have access to some great cars and a model, you get some good shots.

I must apologize for not shooting more photos that any of the owners would want. I'm afraid I did not read the meetup announcement in detail enough to realize we would be painting with light...rather than using our lighting for traditional types of shots. Then my light source ended up not working and I'm afraid I lost interest. I am sorry for not having any worthwhile shots to share.

FYI: Do you realize this is the night of Festival of Lights parade downtown? I imagine the parking garages will be full. Parade starts at 550pm. They start lining up at 430pm at the north end of the route but alot of folks park on the south end so their cars will be there when they are done.

Didn't know that was this weekend. The class is full so we'll still have it. We'll just play it by ear and hope not too many cars are at the top of the garage. :)

So I've secured 1 female model and the owner of one of the cars will be posing with their car as well. This should be a fun night. :)

I wish I could attend too. However, I can't be at two places at the same time.

I have a 1 million candle power spotlight, is that too strong of a light source for what you are planning? Might blind the owners? It works well for light painting in Garden of the Gods.

That's entirely up to you Lynn. We can make it work. We're photographers. :)

Oh man, wish I could attend, as this one sounds fun! Unfortunately, though, I'll be out of town that weekend.
