How UX Designers Think

This is a paid meeting, with prizes including Creative Cloud subscription - see below.

Very excited to announce my friend and colleague Dave Hogue has agreed to speak to our group on this exciting and very requested topic.

Dave has a Ph.D in Design & Psychology, and is one of the most requested speakers at events like Adobe Max. Dave co-manages the Adobe Fireworks group "Fire on the Bay", and is a distinguished author on design and Adobe topics for lynda.com. On top of all that, he is a truly nice guy!

UX design is, of course, all around us. Things we take for granted in our daily life were carefully thought out (in most cases!) by UX designers. ATM machines, parking meters, user manuals - the list is endless! Dave will be discussing the thought process UX designers use when creating solutions for our world.

Learn more about Dave here. Follow Dave on Twitter by clicking here.

Parking is free at the Adobe Garages, on the corner of Park and Almaden in downtown San Jose.

Cost for this meeting is $5, to cover food and prizes.

Sally did the small fee help with "no shows"? Since I drive up from Monterey for these meetings...paying a small fee for such valuable information is well worth it.

    August 9, 2013

    • Sally C.

It DID help, but there were still a lot of no-shows. The difference is: I don't care as much because they paid. I won't charge for every meeting but this one with Dave was worth way more than $5.

      August 9, 2013

    • Irene

Dave was definitely worth far more than $5! The small fee will help discourage "no shows" and ensure that there is enough room for people who really want to attend. The fee paid by the "no shows" can help you defray the cost of the event -- not to mention the overall cost of the Meetup.

Bravo! That was a good one... I had to watch online because I had the flu. This presentation brightened my evening. It put the bounce back in my step even though I wasn't feeling well. Inspiring!

      Hope you feel better soon!

Excellent presenter - even the Q&A was very informative!

The email indicated cost included sandwiches - ???

Any leads to Junior PHP or tech support positions appreciated.

    August 8, 2013

    • Sally C.

I provided sandwiches, veggie and hummus and fruit. Unfortunately, I saw some people taking 3 and 4 sandwiches. I cannot control that.

Thanks, y'all! OK, I'll promote myself just a little. I love speaking at conferences and seminars and to groups and teams. I conduct professional training and development classes and seminars for teams and departments in agencies, start-ups, and companies, and I consult on UX design, strategy, and processes / methods - I love working with teams to help them achieve the best designs and products possible. If you're interested in having me speak or provide training, or if you'd like to work with me on your projects, please contact me at http://davehogue.com/ - I'd be happy to discuss the possibilities with you! :)

Dave Hogue has done an impressive amount of research and thinking about how and why to give users the best experience possible. This presentation was eloquent and informative. I will gbe going back to the recording several times. Some of the screens shown will be very helpful in explaining to others why UX is very important.

Great comment, Ken. I couldn't agree more. Thanks for coming!

      August 7, 2013

Dave Hogue was incredible. The concepts and insight he provided will take me a while to truly digest. He opened my eyes to so many areas of user interface design. Thank you Sally!

George, it was so nice to see you last night. Glad you enjoyed the presentation - you have been a supporter from the beginning!

      August 7, 2013

  • Nico

Dave was awesome; 2.5 hours with no break, they went by really fast, it was that captivating! And not once has he tried to pitch himself or some book/service... I agree with the previous posts; best presentation this meetup has brought us so far! Thank you Sally :)

    2 · August 7, 2013

    • Sally C.

I LOVE that you said that, Nico - the part about not pitching himself or a book/service. That really hits home for me. He was sincere and enthusiastic without looking to sell anything. That's our Dave Hogue . . . he's a gem.

Dave Hogue was very knowledgeable about UX design. I learned plenty of new info of how UX designers, graphic designers, developers, marketers, and how engineers work together to solve problems. Overall, this is an excellent presentation, which is more useful than what I learned during my university years.

    2 · August 6, 2013

    • Sally C.

      Wow! Kind words, indeed.

    1 · August 6, 2013

  • Linda S.

To say I'm glad I attended is an understatement. In a nutshell this presentation distilled the key elements of UX in what one would take hours to learn from a book or website, Bravo! The amount of energy it took to pull this off was amazing and appreciated!

    3 · August 6, 2013

    • Sally C.

Thank you for your kind words. This is NOT easy for either Dave or myself and I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

      August 6, 2013

  • Sally C.

Great meeting! Dave is the consummate professional. I few glitches in the Connect room and he was concerned because it wasn't a flawless presentation for the folks online. That's the sign of a true pro. Brilliant but able to deliver content the little people like me can digest. Thanks to Dave. Great questions from the crowd and overall, a great event. Thanks to all for attending both in person and online!

Just a reminder: if you signed up recently, I already sent the email with the link to the online meeting. If you plan to join us online and NOT in person at Adobe San Jose, don't worry. I will resent the link tomorrow before the meeting. Everyone who pays gets access to the recording link after the meeting, as well.

    August 6, 2013

  • Dave H.

I'm really looking forward to meeting and speaking with everyone Tuesday evening in San Jose!

Please join me for a presentation and discussion about how to think like a UX designer - we'll be talking about how we (as people on project teams responsible for delivering great UX) approach experience design, define and frame problems, generate ideas, and choose from multiple solutions. We'll get into our own heads as well as the heads of our users.

Bring your questions and your awesome energy!
