CANCELLED: Alum Rock Park Photowalk/Scavenger Hunt

Here is the note I just sent out regarding this photowalk.

- - - - -

Ugh I can't win!

Alum Rock Park wants $100 for a permit, just like Santana Row. They are also on a day-to-day basis as to whether the park will actually be open, due to fire danger and resources.

I don't like paying for permits just to go out and enjoy the day and snap a few pictures. Plus, we really don't know if weather conditions and fire resources will permit us to go, and it's gonna be a last minute decision.

Therefore, I have no choice but to cancel this for now.

Perhaps later, when fire danger is not at its peak, we can revisit this location and pitch in for a permit. Sorry for the cancel - no one is more disappointed than me.

Still scoping out this location, but it's supposed to be gorgeous! One of California's oldest municipal parks, with stone bridges, plenty of walking trails, mineral springs, gazebo and log cabin. Lots of opportunities for great photos!

Learn more about the park here:
http://www.sanjoseca.gov/index.aspx?nid=2819

I'll choose a nearby location to meet and will provide the scavenger hunt list as well as a map of the area, on the day of the event. Details to come, but put this date on your calendar. It's a scenic location you may not have seen before!

Things to know:

Parking is $6 per car so I suggest we carpool as much as possible.

More info about the terrain, wildlife and birds in the park can be found here:

I'm wondering, we can bring point & Shoot cameras instead of DSLRs. At Santanna Row, I brought my compact digital camera, and another time I brought my iPad to shoot pictures. The security guy just said "Hi" to me and drove by.

Were you with 30+ other people? I think if you are by yourself, it's probably not an issue. But 37 people walking around together would most likely be suspicious. Plus there is the fire danger and there is no guarantee the park will even be open. I would like to revisit this location for a future photowalk, though.

Just read in the San Jose mercury that there are closing Alum Rock Park because of fire danger. Is the photo walk in danger also. They said call this number for updates[masked]

Thanks, Thomas. I have been in touch with them and it's a day to day issue as to whether the park will be opened. The ranger I spoke with this morning told me we need a $100 permit. This is the first I have heard of this. I don't need the added stress of trying to collect money and not know if this is really going to happen this weekend.

So I have cancelled this event, to be rescheduled at a future date. I am disappointed but I have no options.

Oh, boo. This is going to be an amazing photo walk, but I can no longer go because I have to work here in SF. Alum Rock looks like a beautiful place of many treasures!
And, to everyone who can make it out there, enjoy enjoy!!

Hi Sally, I'm excited you picked this location. This is where I had my engagement pics taken a couple of years ago. I haven't been there since. It will be nice to go back, this time behind the lense :-)

Thomas, I could use any help you can offer on 1) a coffee shop nearby as a meeting place, and 2) planning a route to see the waterfalls, bridges and log cabin. Anything you can offer would be welcome!
