Going Beyond the Camera with Stephen Burns

One of the blessings of being an artist is that we have an innate drive to create beyond what we see and experience in the natural world. As artists, we often do not accept what we see in the everyday world around us as the final means of creative expression. Instead we push beyond our experience to create something unique. This is what “Beyond the Camera” is all about. Stephen will focus on using Photoshop as a tool of creative expression using the new features to create imagery that go beyond the still image shot from a camera.

Because we have the computer to create using all visual mediums such as photography, painting, film making, sculpting and writing, to name a few, we have the ability to use several or all of those creative traditions, to express ourselves using our own unique voice.

Adobe has been at the forefront of producing digital tools for artists for decades and one of Stephen’s favorites is Photoshop. Stephen will share how he uses the newer features of the Creative Cloud & Photoshop for both his workflow and creation.

The presentation will cover following concepts:

How to use the Adobe Creative Cloud to organize your composition
Understanding Smart Objects to maximize your workflow
Thoughtful use of layer masks
Clever use of textures to add character to your creations
Layer effects and adjustment layers to control your lighting
Painting techniques to pull it all together and more

  I was wrong.... When I got to the GG bridge the traffic was all backed up to marin (the closing of the Toll plaza) it was 5:30 so even though it's only 7 miles away I couldn't have made it before 6:30 or later.

I thought Brian's presentation was eye opening regarding the tremendous creative range in CS6e Photoshop. Thanks for showing us this amazing range of creative tools! However, I could really use a video or instruction set to review the methods used in the crafting of the various layers. I tried applying some of the methods demonstrated in the talk but clearly need more detail on the keystroke sequences. FYI: Photoshop Beginner.

  But monetizing art flows from two different things. you must be technically competent in your medium AND you need a vision, an inspiration that burns deep, deep, deep within your soul that has to get out.

  The most authoritative bio on van Gogh is the recent massive tome by Naifeh and White Smith, two Pulitzer Prize winning Harvard Law School graduates who spent 10 years in their recent meticulous work that has 1500 pages of online footnotes.
  
  Van Gogh repeatedly bartered his painting for art supplies, rent, meals and more.
  
  Additionally, we know he sold at least three paintings during his life, unlike the Hollywood portrayal of Lust for Life.
  
  Furthermore, and MUCH more importantly, van Gogh was a national celebrity several months before his death, due in large part to an extraordinarily favorable review of his art by France's most compelling art critic, Alber Aurier, whose review of Vincent's work while Vinecent was living changed art history forever.

  Vincent's brother Theo, who was the most successful art dealer at Goupil, the largest warehouse of fine French Art, whose massive purchases of Monet works at phenomenal prices had rocked the art establishment a few years earlier, was flooded with serious inquiries by collectors and dealers who traveled far and wide to view Vincent's work.
  
  Vincent was therefore featured prominently at an exhibition at none other than the Salon, where the clear consensus was that he stole the show, putting the extremely popular Seurat and other lesser lights such as Toulouse Lautrec, Signac and Pisarro into the shadows.
  
  Indeed, Toulouse Lautrec said exactly that and Monet was quoted as saying that van Gogh's paintings were "the best in the exhibition."
  
  The opening of that show at the legendary Salon was presided over by the President of France.

InDesign User Group

Will the timeline function be covered? Is there any way to hear the audio while you are still in PhotoShop. I know you hear when it when you export but I want to hear the audio when I am setting up the timeline. Wrong program?

  Dave, I'll check with Stephen. I can hear audio when I edit movies in Photoshop, but it doesn't always send out over Connect (unless I hook up an external speaker). Is that what you are asking about? I don't think Stephen plans to show video editing...

  Linda, yes, sadly (or maybe happily) that is true. What that means for me is that I don't get to go to Austria to record anymore. My learn by video titles went back to Adobe Press (PeachPit & Pearson) so my videos will still be available through their normal channels, just not through video2brain.

Vinayak, Photoshop is an essential tool in life for me. I have so many shots of friends, kids, pets & travels that I NEED to communicate with the beauty I saw them in. Often the camera shot doesn't live up to the magnificence of a place or person.
