Photoshop with Stephen Burns | Beyond the Camera

Going Beyond the Camera with Stephen Burns

One of the blessings of being an artist is that we have an innate drive to create beyond what we see and experience in the natural world. As artists, we often do not accept what we see in the everyday world around us as the final means of creative expression. Instead we push beyond our experience to create something unique. This is what “Beyond the Camera” is all about. Stephen will focus on using Photoshop as a tool of creative expression using the new features to create imagery that go beyond the still image shot from a camera.

Because we have the computer to create using all visual mediums such as photography, painting, film making, sculpting and writing, to name a few, we have the ability to use several or all of those creative traditions, to express ourselves using our own unique voice.

Adobe has been at the forefront of producing digital tools for artists for decades and one of Stephen’s favorites is Photoshop. Stephen will share how he uses the newer features of the Creative Cloud & Photoshop for both his workflow and creation.

The presentation will cover following concepts:

  • How to use the Adobe Creative Cloud to organize your composition
  • Understanding Smart Objects to maximize your workflow
  • Thoughtful use of layer masks
  • Clever use of textures to add character to your creations
  • Layer effects and adjustment layers to control your lighting
  • Painting techniques to pull it all together and more

    • Mark Scheidecker

I was wrong.... When I got to the GG bridge the traffic was all backed up to marin (the closing of the Toll plaza) it was 5:30 so even though it's only 7 miles away I couldn't have made it before 6:30 or later.

      March 27

    • Mark Scheidecker

Once again the GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES party is more important than the PUBLIC NEED. (you know, the public, the people who have and are still PAYING for that bridge)

Mothers Third Arm provides you all these with safety. Mothers Third Arm has great functionality and especially if you are thinking about the welfare of your child. It is normally a great aid to the mom and dad because it helps the mom to carry on its other actions without being near to the child while the child is taking the feed from the bottle.http://mothersthirdarm.com

Very informative and well performed talk. Need cheat sheet to keep up with keystrokes.

    March 27

    • Kelly McCathran

Stephen, Photoshop will make a cheat sheet for you. Go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts, then click SUMMARIZE. Photoshop will save an HTML document with EVERY shortcut in Photoshop :D Review the recording to practice all the cool tricks: http://tinyurl.com/cs...

I thought Brian's presentation was eye opening regarding the tremendous creative range in CS6e Photoshop. Thanks for showing us this amazing range of creative tools! However, I could really use a video or instruction set to review the methods used in the crafting of the various layers. I tried applying some of the methods demonstrated in the talk but clearly need more detail on the keystroke sequences. FYI: Photoshop Beginner.

Chris, we always post the recordings under Discussion > Message Board, here is a short url directly to it (Stephen, not Brian's presentation is already there) http://tinyurl.com/cs...

There are a bunch of back-in spaces along Townsend adjacent to the railyards, and some of them usually open up at the end of the workday. You have to be eastbound on Townsend in order to back into them.

Is there any way I can get a seat next to an aisle or in front ??
I need a bit of room to extend the affected leg.
Can anyone confirm if this is doable ?
Thanks in advance Kelly or staff.

Will the timeline function be covered? Is there any way to hear the audio while you are still in PhotoShop. I know you hear when it when you export but I want to hear the audio when I am setting up the timeline. Wrong program?

Just FYI, video2brain was bought out by Lynda.com, and is no longer doing English language subscriptions. Here's info: http://tinyurl.com/b4...

      March 9

    • Kelly McCathran

Linda, yes, sadly (or maybe happily) that is true. What that means for me is that I don't get to go to Austria to record anymore. My learn by video titles went back to Adobe Press (PeachPit & Pearson) so my videos will still be available through their normal channels, just not through video2brain.

Vinayak, Kelly has created some beautiful art work with Photoshop and do a Google search for "John Derry Photoshop".

How necessary is it in one's life to have art and beauty in addition to technical chops?

I believe that beauty is more important than money. Didn't Gandhi prove that?

    March 7

  • Matt Dubuque

    Awesome choice Kelly!

    March 7

  • Kelly McCathran

Vinayak, Photoshop is an essential tool in life for me. I have so many shots of friends, kids, pets & travels that I NEED to communicate with the beauty I saw them in. Often the camera shot doesn't live up to the magnificence of a place or person.
