Discussion - In what ways do religious traditions still affect us?

  • November 23, 2013 · 4:00 PM

Meeting in a private room at a decent IHOP, room is free as long as we all have something to eat.

This meetup will be a discussion around traditions and beliefs that we may have that are rooted in religion.

Some thoughts on what to discuss:

What religious traditions do we still follow as atheists, and is there any harm in these traditions?  Christmas, Easter, Bless you after you sneeze, etc...
Has religious traditions affected how we view sexual relations?
Should religion be respected as many claim it should?

It felt very "familiar". Wednesday night bible study at the First Baptist church in Leesburg. The format was eerily similar in a parallel/counter universalist Twilight Zone Kinda way.

Sounds great - wish I could make it but I am recovering from labyrinthitis - what's that? Imagine seasickness taken to extreme!

No problems Julie, I tried to get the normal time. We can do the subject again in the future. I want to do the morality one again as well as I think it started to get interesting right at the end.

Big day tomorrow (today). This event, the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, and a 12 hour telethon by The Good Atheist.

My plan is to order something light at IHOP and then go to Boston Fish House for the heavier dinner. If I order something light, I would think that IHOP would be okay with that since 4 PM is an odd time to eat anyway. I am open to going to another restaurant in the area if people want to go there instead of Boston Fish House.

At the part of Florida I'm in, 4:00 is not at all an odd time to eat supper.

I think these are good discussion topics. I'd like to add the langauge of free thought as something to discuss. I mentioned at the last Discussion that we have no word for the 'soul' for instance. We say that we've 'lost' our belief or 'lost' our religion. I think this is a mistake. It implies that we're missing something. Of course we gain something when we liberate our minds, but the words that we traditionally use to talk about these things frame the discussion in a negative way.

2013 is 2013 years from the birth of Jesus . . . we force that knowledge on everyone on the planet every day.

even though technically it's not. Best scholarship dates the event described in the texts as 2018 years ago, in 5 BCE.

Any interest in dinner at a nicer restaurant in the area afterwards?

Jeffrey, IHOP expects us to order food in exchange for the room so we want to continue to maintain that relationship. If only a couple of people don't order, that is probably fine, but if a contingent plan to eat afterwards it could become more challenging. I hope that makes sense.

David, you make plenty of sense.

Jeffrey is proposing to order "something light"- NOT not order (in that order). I'd think IHOP would be satisfied with that (especially if big tips are given!) Folks are certainly free to spontaneously meet somewhere else afterwards. I have no opinion about dinner necessarily, but since many are driving a long distance to get to Sanford's IHOP in the first place, maybe they'd like to stay a while...

IHOP was chosen since it's free, roomy, and there's no alcohol. However, there are various Saturday night activities available in town. Yes, even in Sanford.
