Hi All!

Since our planned sit-in for Civil Rights is no longer necessary, thanks to the leadership of David and Joseph and others and the appropriate actions of City officials (http://touch.orlandosentinel.com/#section/1229/article/p2p[masked]/), let's celebrate a small bit of progress instead!  Just an informal gathering for light refreshments in downtown Winter Garden.  Please reconfirm or change your RSVP.  All are welcomed, including those who had not RSVP'd previously.

Traffic is awful. Reservations are in my name not the group name if anyone arrived first.

Just started a real estate class, have to cancel, would have missed the class if we still needed to protest, but should go to the class now it is just dinner. Great job all especially Joseph on this victory for the constitution!

I really wish I could go. I would love to meet free thinkers on the west side of Orlando. I don't know if any groups or persons that I could connect with. :(. Unfortunately , my son has a meeting that I have to go to in that night. Anyone on the west side interested in another time ?

Let me second the call for a west side meet up. I live in Clermont and would love to meet people from this group out in my area.

I would be willing to set one up James. Although it may be just us! Lol. Can anyone host an event?

Is anyone coming from the Maitland/Winter Park area (near the Enzian Theatre) who might be able to give me a ride?)

I'm go glad this event will be a celebration instead of a protest. Sorry I can't make it, but I see Joseph will be there. Congratulations to him and to all of you who support the important work of preserving the strong wall between state and church.

No need to come to Winter Garden on September 11th, everyone. Under threat of protest, they expedited the process and resolved it. The show of force worked. Thanks to everyone who intended to come.

Since you won't be coming to Winter Garden next week, do this instead. Look up your local city, county, or school board meeting and let me know if they are praying or if they aren't. We'll see what we can do about it.

Here's the Winter Garden story from the Orlando Sentinel: http://touch.orlandosentinel.com/#section/1229/article/p2p[masked]/

UPDATE: The Winter Garden city commission will meet today at 3:00 to enact a policy that may resolve our complaint. Here are the three options being considered by the City Commission: 1. Moment of Silence and Pledge
    2. Invocation open to local organizations and Pledge
    3. Neither invocation nor Pledge The first two options include allowing any individual to remain seated or to leave the room during these activities.

I will be there, but not in protest and hope this issue is resolved today to the satisfaction of our member, the CFFC and the FFRF. Stay tuned...

Anyone from the St cloud area going?

    • Mike

I just moved and live in kissimmee. I may have extra room if you want to car pool.

I'm definitely going to be there.

I'll be there and, knowing my toddler, I'll probably be breastfeeding too. Just one more reason for idiots to get upset!

Can someone explain what this event is all about, please?

    1 · September 2

    • David W.

Thanks Ross. We put the link in above as a placeholder and you can read that (assuming the pay wall at Orlando Sentinel isn't preventing you). On Thursday, a local freethinker and resident of Winter Garden was ousted from the City Commission meeting for not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance. There is new all over the internet and the story broke records for comments at the Orlando Sentinel news site. We'll be putting together a strategy for this even that makes it clear (for reasonable people and bloggers) that this is not about patriotism, but civil rights and how divided this nation is on the issue of "Under God."

The ejection of the person was not expected since his activism (recording the meeting) and the fact that he got it on video is related to studying and documenting the invocations at local government meetings.

      Does that help?

Given the date, I think that the mayor will try his best to foil these plans by asking everyone to stand in moment of silence in remembrance of 9/11 victims, then launch into invocation. He will try to make it look like people are disrespecting the victims. We just need to be prepared for this tactic.

Good point, Tony. Thanks! Weaponized religion and weaponized patriotism.
