i was super excited to ride with my fellow bike enthusiasts after moving to Miami from NY, where my bicycle was my main source or transportation. It was totally amazing until some girl squeezed btw me & another rider, in a space where she obviously didn't fit, ramming into my bike and knocking me down-giving me a dislocated shoulder, fat lip, and an arm that won't go above my head. I also landed on my chest, the site of a surgical biospy i'd two weeks ago. In short, I hurt everywhere but can't go to the hospital to see if I'm seriously hurt bc I don't have insurance. The fact that she didn't even stop to see I was okay adds insult to injury. Thankfully two awesome guys stopped everything and created a human shield around me, while my bf helped me get up and to safety. To those guys, thank you for representing what this ride is about--community. To the mean girl who knocked me out, think ab the consequences of ur actions. We are all connected in this universe.

Sorry to hear Ana Maria. Seems to be a few mishaps every month.

I’ve observed some ways to stay safe and avoid an involuntary dismount while riding the Miami Critical Mass. Seems simple enough but maybe some don’t know.

Don’t look back. Unless you’re an experienced rider, looking back over your shoulder to look for someone almost always produces a swerve in the direction you look, sometimes both directions if you get spooked.

Hold your line. This is race term but is applicable in this instance. Try to ride smoothly and not weave around too much. Make small un-exaggerated movements around manhole covers, etc. and then return to your line. Back off. Don’t overlap wheels. This happens when you ride so close to the bike in front of you that your tire overlaps their back tire. If there is wheel contact, it’s the person in the back that usually gets to see the pavement up close.

Go around. Look out for groups or families riding together. They tend to ride 3-4 across close together to BS. You will need to ride around them, not through them.

Damn kids. Small children tend to dart around oblivious to anything. They’re just having fun after all. Also watch for the BMX riders. They tend to stand up to pedal a lot and it produces the pump-weave. Leave an out. Scan in front of you for all of the above. Have a plan if you need to bail.

Be considerate. If you are riding faster than the group, announce yourself when passing. “Hey, I’m on your right” “Coming around you left side”. You get the idea. Thank them as you pass them.

Chillax dude. When your arms, neck and back are tensed up you can’t ride smooth and hold your line. Relax and have fun.

Great!! It always is. Helmets should be the law in Florida.

    April 27, 2013

    • Vegan S.

Florida law says you don't even have to wear a helmet on a motor cycle.

The ride was excellent, but what no one has mention is the amount of people that take loud speakers and play great songs for all to ride with.

    April 22, 2013

    • Vegan S.

Half of the attendants do, half of them don't. It is a must for me to recommend a helmet, but it is totally optional. I have seen some people fall on previous rides. The ones who wear helmets seem to get up a lot easier!

      April 24, 2013

    • Collin

Helmets don't prevent crashes but you are less likely to suffer head injury when landing on your head.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
