MAIN TOPIC ABSTRACT
Intro to Groovy & Grails

Java is dead. Long live the JVM! As Java the Language has reached maturity, leaders in the Java space have begun using the JVM as a platform to capture recent innovations in programming language design, preserving Java the Platform as a place of fresh ideas and increasing productivity. Low-ceremony metaprogramming, usable collection syntax, and closures are all native parts of the languages currently in use by the cool kids, but there is little hope of moving them through the JCP into Java the Language any time soon. Enter Groovy! Groovy is one new langauge of the JVM that captures all of these good ideas while retaining an astonishing degree of interoperability with legacy Java code and a syntax friendly to Java eyes.

Ruby once had a similar story, but did not rise to prominence as a language until its killer app, Rails, captured significant mindshare in the web development community three years ago. The Groovy community has leveraged the lessons of Rails to create Grails, a best-in-class web framework built on the foundation of enterprise-class Java infrastructure like Spring, Hibernate, Sitemesh, and JUnit. Emphasizing essence over ceremony and preserving compatibility with the existing ecosystem of Java libraries and tools, Grails is growing as a leading-edge solution to web development on the JVM.

MAIN SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Tim Berglund

Tim Berglund runs a software consulting firm called the August Technology Group, which provides training and development services to customers building web applications on the JVM and in embedded devices. With his keen sense of timing, Tim spent his early career writing firmware, then switched to the Internet just as soon as the dotcom boom was coming to an end. He loves open-source software and the rapidly diversifying world of the Java platform. He has been writing software since he was a boy, but only started brewing his own beer a few years ago. He lives in Littleton with his wife and three children.

BASIC CONCEPTS ABSTRACT
PmWiki

No development tool offers more collaborative opportunity than a wiki.
PmWiki is one of many implementations, but its ease of setup and use
makes it ideal for small to medium sized development groups. In this
brief discussion I'll cover basic installation, themes and extensions as
well as offer thoughts on page organization and issues related to
security. I'll also talk about how this tool is used in a real
development environment to open access to projects to those clients who
are paying for it.

BASIC CONCEPTS SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Michael Hammel

Michael J. Hammel is a Principal Software Engineer for Colorado
Engineering, Inc. (CEI) in Colorado Springs, CO, with over 20 years of
software development and management experience. He has written over 100
articles for numerous online and print magazines and is the author of
three books on the GIMP, the premier open source graphics editing
package.
