Auto-sizing html blocks in CSS

The CSS box model seems to be inflexible -- for the longest time, I could find no good way to make percentage-width columns with fixed-width borders. But, it turns out that html blocks can be set in CSS to inherit the width of their parent containers. This opens up new ways to get flexible designs while avoiding over-specification of the structure in CSS.
