The Mattatuck Trail, Peterson Park, Wolcott CT

This is my favorite walking trail. Only 1/2 a mile from the park you feel as if you've taken a time machine to a different land. Huge glacial rock formations covered with moss, deep caverns where you can hear the stream echo from far below, alternating calm and swift running water with small water falls and thick black mud. The deeper into the forest you go the more foreboding and eventually sinister it feels. More than once the hair standing on the back of my neck has turned me and my Daisy back. (alone at dusk and afraid of the dark, not a good combo, lol).

We can plan a box lunch event at the park or I can check out area restaurants for a barefoot lunch outing.

Let's not forget the hitch hiker we picked up ;)

Kevin, it was a nice little hike in a beautiful setting. Thanx for setting it up and leading it, otherwise I doubt that I would have hit a trail-head so close to a large urban area and missed this little gem of a hike!

That was a great hike, I can't imagine the fun we'd have had with more hikers and cooperative weather. We hiked for a couple hours and followed George on a geocache search deep in the woods (No booze this time) Lunch was at the Athenian Diner in Waterbury. Great day and scintillating conversation. Thanks. I'd like to plan a do over soon on the same trail.

I haven't been to this park before - is there more than one parking lot? If so, what landmarks should I look for to find meeting place? (GPS says 123 Mad River Rd. Correct?)

Smart phones were not made for stupid people (me). I was sitting in a diner trying to reply but have no idea how to post so I just stared at my phone. Doh! Peterson Park is as easy as can be. The pavilion is right next to the parking lot.

Good morning. I'm going forward with the hike. WVIT-30 weather's Darrin Sweeney claims that the storms aren't coming till later. Hopefully I'll see you there.

I have no problem with rain but if there are thunderstorms around I'll need to pass. I will be there at 9:45 so please make your own decisions. Inbox me for my phone number. We can meet in the pavilion next to the parking lot

It looks like thunderstorms are heading our way for tomorrow according to the most recent forecast. As a result, I do believe I'll pass on this hike and get some indoor spring cleaning accomplished instead. But.. if the forecast changes within the next 10 hours, I'll be there.

Thick black mud sounds interesting. Local restaurants sound yummy. Are you sure the two mix, though? ...Or do you have instructions to rookies about how to make our feet "mainstream" again/

I've never been comfortable going into businesses barefoot even though others enjoy it. I would probably just rinse off in the stream and wear flip flops. I'll barefoot the NYC subway system but a restaurant? No way, LMAO!

I'm following the weather and all I can say is "Bummer". I'll make a decision tomorrow night or early Saturday. I hope the forecast changes

Hi gang! I'm going to try to make it for this hike. I was really disappointed to miss the Case Mtn event, as it is a "backyard" hike for me and one I've done many times! Hope to see you at the trailhead next Saturday.
