Introduction

Former Senior Software Engineer at Google, now Director of Software Development at Owen Software and (co-)founder of a number of startups.

What languages/frameworks do you use (Java, .NET, PHP, Ruby, etc.)?

Java, C#, C++, Python, Perl, PHP, ASP.NET, Visual Basic, Javascript, R, PHP

What topics might you be interested in?

Programming, machine learning, system administration, web development, development leadership, entrepreneurship

Do you have any specific areas of expertise? Would you be willing to share it with the group?

Machine learning, computer vision (especially of medical images), data structures and algorithms, embedded systems development, medical device development, public speaking, inspiration, and STEM teaching. I'm also a former Googler and have strong opinions about fostering a creative culture and a set of extreme-quality development practices from the experience.

What is your favorite unit test framework and why?

I've always been pretty happy with JUnit, simply because it's lightweight, simple, and intuitive to write a test.

What is your favorite version control system and why?

Perforce, for its excellent handling of merge conflicts. But since it's a commercial system, I typically make do with Subversion, which provides version control without complicating things more than necessary.

  • It was a great talking with you the other day and its good to hear your happy and doing well at Google. I got an inquiry from a Google rep after the talk and am starting the process of interviewing again. Hope to see you again before too long. BTW, did you see that Brian D. is going a talk at the Machine Learning meetup?

  • Thank you for your kind words. Perhaps we will run into one another at a Tech Talk or other event.
