When: 6 december 2009, 13:00
VOC Ship (NEMO center)
To celebrate our group's passing of the 300-member mark, let us get together next Sunday, November 29, for a visit to two true Highlights of Amsterdam:
- The VOC (Dutch East Indies) Ship
- The Rembrandt House
Yes, this will be another one of our double-deckers, or one-stone-two-bird-undertakings, for lack of a better term.
A few words about the things we'll see. The VOC ship is a true-to-life replica of an 18-century sail ship "De Amsterdam" that, they say, perished in a storm. It is pretty much the kind of ship that the ghost of the legendary Flying Dutchman may have sailed on (and may still be sailing, for all we know). So come and enjoy the deep aestheticism of the shape of a ship right out of the Golden Age; they don't build 'em like that anymore!
The Rembrandt House. This is a/the actual house that the great painter lived and wrought in. The museum seems to have expositions dealing both with Rembrandt's personal, day-to-day life 350 years ago, and the art life of the era. It doesn't seem as though there are any paintings of his on display there; only some engravings. Still a lot to see.
Let's meet right in front of the VOC ship (the closest you can get to it before buying a ticket) at 1PM. It's basically at the science center NEMO, very close to the Central Station (Oosterdok 2; map
). Do make sure you write down my phone number in case you cannot find the group or are running late. After checking out the ship, and toward 3pm, we will proceed to the Rembrandt House (Jodenbreestraat 4; map
). Around 5, once they politely ask us to vacate the House, and if we feel like it, we might go and sit down somewhere for a dinner.Museum cards
are not valid at the ship, unfortunately. Each will have to pay 5 euros to come onboard. The entrance fee at the Rembrandt House is 8 euros, or nothing, if you can produce a museum card
P.S. Additionally, it will be appreciated if you can chip in a euro or two into the group's fund (not required). Meetup, the company, does charge me a bit for maintaining this group...
See you next Sunday,
