Second Friday: How People Connect - human relationships at the MIT Museum

I will be out of town, but this is too good to miss. Anyone care to host it?  Thank you, Lois for volunteering.

Second Friday at the MIT Museum: How Humans Connect
2/14: 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Free with Museum admission: $10 - discounts available.

On Valentine's Day, begin your evening at the MIT Museum by exploring a wide range of human relationships - with objects, locations, and other people. Talk with MIT researchers and learn why and how we interact with the world around us.

How does social media affect community behavior? And how is it that we are able to emphathize and predict what others are thinking? Explore these questions and more!

Free with museum admission.

Although I was disappointed in the 6:00 talk downstairs, I'm glad I stayed for the upstairs exhibits and talks. I spent some time with a woman showing how the brain visually changes based on what we are thinking and took place in an activity that was offered.

I'm glad to read that you had that experience; that's more on target for what I expected.

    Hi Paul,
The actual event begins at 5. After hearing that many people don't get out of work before 5, I had suggested that we get there for the meetup at 6 and enter then. Certainly people can go anytime they want and, if interested in joining the meetup, can come out and meet us at the assigned place. I don't have any experience there and it sounds as if Sashi does, so forget about 6 PM and let's meet at 5:30 PM; whatever room in which one usually buys tickets, let's meet there...I'll have a meetup sign with our group name.

In my estimation you were far more enamoring than the MIT personnel who essentially performed a bait and switch.

      February 16, 2014

    • Lois

Good phrase,,,,bait and switch. Glad to be more enamoring than them.......

      February 17, 2014

  • Paul H.

You didn't miss much other than the great group of people that attended. It was a bait and switch.

Good take on the event, Mary

sorry I missed this -didn't check me email in time.

Having seen the Museum before and having left the technological field, I was bored (didn't deal with the chemistry of connecting) and left early. Regardless, meet-ups are the best thing going. I've met a wonderful woman !

    • Lois

Sounds like you chose the right way for you to spend your time!

      February 15, 2014

    • Elana

So, I guess you're still pretty good at "chemistry" :) Congratulations! :

      February 15, 2014

  • Lois

    Hi Guys,
If you missed it, don't feel too bad. I totally didn't get it....only at MIT would this be termed something about human relationships - it was so much more about computers.
On another note, it was all pretty good-natured.

I got tied up with project and probably wouldn't be able to get there before 6:30 so better change my rsvp to no. If you go out for dinner or drinks, can you please post where you're going? Thx

Unforeseen delays - I'll never make it out to Cambridge in time for this, dammit! Hope someone else can attend for me! Enjoy!

    Hi,
I'm really sorry too but I cannot make it. I hope someone posts the details after the event - would love to know what comes up.

I was looking forward to this, but have to cancel. Just got a call and need to be somewhere else. Does this mean I am doomed to be clueless about how people connect??? [smile]

    February 14, 2014

    • Lois

Probably your own reflections are just as valuable.

      February 14, 2014

    • Jean A.

You've gotta laugh, right? I have a friend who is moving tomorrow and having a meltdown...

I would very much like to attend this event, signed up for it. I wonder if I am on the list of attendees.

    February 14, 2014

Weather and schedule uncertainties - so it's 'maybe'. Since there's no maybe to check, I'll put no. With 57 people showing, I won't be missed.

    February 14, 2014

    • Lois

That sounds harsh....whatever you do, hope your evening is a good one.

      February 14, 2014

Sadly I have to cancel my "yes". Im having knee problems from a fall I took last weekend.

Does anyone live near Salem & want to carpool?

    February 13, 2014

  • Lois

    Hi Esther and All,
We will meet at 5:30 PM, right passed the ticket purchases near the main floor gallery (on the left, I believe) I will have a sign, am a short person and will wear black leggings and rose blouse. There is no parking lot, but parking might be available on Mass Ave, Main St. and 2 parking garages on Green St., a few blocks away.
There are no tickets necessary for this event, but there is a $10 or $5 entrance fee.
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night.

Are we meeting at 5 or 6pm and is there a designated meeting spot? Also, can you please suggest best place to park? Thx

    February 9, 2014

    • Esther B

Mary, thanks so much for the information!

      February 11, 2014

    • Ron R.

lots of metered parking on the side streets near the museum. Last time I got a spot right by the museum door. Meters run until six pm.

      February 11, 2014

  • Paul H.

    Hi Lois,
Thanks for getting back quickly. I live up the street behind Cambridge City Hall so the museum is a rather short walk down the street. I believe I can get in free with an associated museum ID I have so I think I'll get there early. But, I would like to meet you and others at the designated 'meetup' place so please specify where.
    Paul

I'm confused, the times listed are both 5 PM & 6 PM.
    What time does it start?

    February 10, 2014

  • sashi

Tickets cannot be purchased in advance for 2nd Friday event. Max # of people is 500. 5.30pm is ideal time to show up. Just spoke to Museum staff.

    February 9, 2014

  • Donna

I'm on the wait list. If I don't get in, I expect I can still go to the museum during this time right? Not exclusively for our group from what I saw last time.

    February 2, 2014

    • sashi

Hi Donna, any one can attend the talk as long as you have a ticket. sitting with the Meetup is another matter, but who cares. If you become a member they send you all the events, which you can signup, independently. Wish you well.

  • Suzanne S

I have a group going through Boston Walking but the more the merrier. They can join us. We're going for ice cream at a famous place down the street after or some might go for dinner.

Museum admission is $10 -- Lois, please send me your address, I'll send some meetup signs and a little telescoping Meetup placard.

    February 6, 2014

    • Lois

Ron, Thank you. If you remember bring them tonight, Feb 7, as I will be at the MFA.

      February 7, 2014

  • Deborah L.

Since I'm taking care of pets while a family member is away, I'll be unable to attend events the week of 2/14 - 23. I am loving the opportunities posted! I'll look for more of them toward the end of the month.
    Thank you again,
    Deborah

I drove by the museum today with a friend who happened to point it out. I was surprised that it was more in the Kendall Sq general area than the Central Sq. I didn't think there was a waitlist, Donna, for this event.

  • Lois

    Hi Jean Ann,
I look forward to meeting you. I will call the MIT Museum on Monday to get more details, but from the website this is what I found:
265 Mass Ave, Cambridge, admission is to the museum:$10, snrs;stud-$5, Building N51;[masked]
There will be researchers there to talk about the exhibition from 5-8PM. Perhaps we'll meet at 6, stay 'til 8, then go for food/beverages somewhere nearby.

This sounds like fun and thank you, Lois, for offering to host. Do we need to go online to purchase a ticket in advance or can we do so at the museum that evening? I know where the museum is located; just have never been there.

    January 25, 2014

    • Ron R.

The museum is in Central Square, right on Massachusetts Avenue.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Hi, I'm relatively new at this; are you looking for an organizer who is seasoned with the group or should I volunteer? Not been to this museum much and the subject sounds fun and interesting. I guess we need to download a ticket.

Hi Lois, you'll be just wonderful.
