Fisherman Island Nat'l Wildlife Refuge(4 miles)

  • Mar 1, 2014 · 6:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

The Virginia barrier island chain, including Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge, is one of only 17 sites in the United States classified as a “Wetland of International Importance.” The Refuge is the southernmost barrier island, located at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and separated from the Eastern Shore of Virginia by about one-half mile of water. The Refuge is designated as an Important Bird Area and has been growing!! In the late 1800’s it was only 25 acres, compared to today at 2,000 acres!!

Because of the critical nature of its habitats for wildlife, Fisherman Island is closed to the public.

We will be touring the island with a ranger from the refuge and walking a total of about 4 miles on varying degrees of loose or packed sand.

The tour introduces visitors to the unique variety of wildlife found on the island. As you pass through several habitats, you will learn about wildlife management on refuges, explore the diversity of wildlife, and discover the rich history of Fisherman Island and the role it played during World War II.

After the tour, we will head over to nearby Kiptopeke State Park and eat our lunch there before heading back to Richmond.

This should be a really special day!!

The bulk photo uploader is currently not working (probably related to the recent website issues). Right now you can only upload one photo at a time, so if you have a lot of photos to share, I suggest you just wait and try again later.

Just a suggestion, but if weather causes the refuge to cancel the tour, maybe we could go to one of the nearby State Parks, and make our road time count. I'm keeping good thoughts, however. I'm looking forward to this, especially since it's the last tour of the season!
