Ahoj pratele / Hello friends!

Just a few days after our successful and pleasant September 2009 Meetup at the Claddagh Irish Pub we are back to you with details regarding our October 2009 Meetup. This time our Meetup will be organized jointly with the Czechoslovak Classroom Committee of the University of Pittsburg.

Our October 2009 Pittsburgh Czech Language Meetup Group will meet on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 2:30 PM. The place is room No. 1228 (12th floor) of the Cathedral of Learning of University of Pittsburgh in Oakland.

PROGRAM

This time, a very special guest has been invited to meet members of our Czechoslovak societies in Pittsburgh, Mr. Ctirad Masin. The Masin Brothers, Ctirad and Josef, are known for their resistance against the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. Their escape, as they crossed the border from Czechoslovakia into East Germany to reach West Berlin, is a dramatic story of courage against overwhelming odds which led to the largest manhunt of the Cold War. On February 28, 2008, Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek awarded the Masins with the "Prime Minister's Medal" at a ceremony in the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C. Mr. Ctirad Masin will attend our October 24th meeting to tell the story of this extraordinary quest for freedom.

There were about four books published about their story:

• (German) Vrbecký, František "Die Mašíns geben nicht auf" ("Mrtví nemluví"), Berlin 1989, ISBN 3327008183 Translation of a Czechoslovak propaganda book
• (Czech) Ota Rambousek: Jenom ne strach, Nezávislé tiskové stredisko, 1990, ISBN 8085196026
• (Czech) Jan Novák: Zatím dobrý (So far so good), Petrov, Brno 2004, ISBN 8072271946
• (English) Barbara Masin: Gauntlet, Naval Institute Press, 2006, ISBN 1591145155 (Czech title: Odkaz, Prague 2005 ISBN, 8020412484) website

The last one is available in the US (for example Amazon.com, books stores, etc.). Also, Mr. Masin may be selling this book during his visit (planned but not confirmed). An unique opportunity to have a book signed!

Extractions of the last book, written by Barbara Masin (daughter of Josef Masin, Ctirad’s brother) are available online:

http://books.google.com/books?id=FVP02TsTwVgC&printsec=frontcover&dq=gauntlet#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Also, you are encouraged to review other available resources about the story online (most unfortunately in Czech only):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masin
http://www.gauntletinfo.com/
http://bratri-masinove.cz/odboj/showpage.php?name=uvod
http://protikomunisticke.misto.cz
http://protikomunisticke.misto.cz/svedectvi/8b.htm

Please try to read / gain as much as info you can and have some questions prepared so Mr. Masin can answer them.

ORGANIZATION

In the meeting room, coffee and soft drinks will be available. All visitors are encouraged to bring some food to share (chlebicky, kolace, babovka, cookies, etc.). It is hard to estimate how many of us will come but based on the fact that it is weekend day and based on “historical” data our guess is between 20 and 35. Participation of the other society is estimated between 35 to 50 so the room will be quite full (the room capacity is about 100 people).

Please do RSVP through our website and come to meet.

Thank you and we hope to see many of you on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 2:30 PM.

Thank you,

Pavel

Ahoj pratele / Hello friends!

After one month we are going to meet again :-) ... this time at a new place ... at Claddagh Irish Pub at the Southside Works (Wednesday, September 30, 2009, starting at 6:00 PM)! This time we have a reserved private room for up to 32 people so please make sure to come!

We hope to meet more of you while our July and August 2009 Meetups were very successful, especially the August 2009 Meetup cook-out at Robin' place. We will be talking about a very special guest coming to Pittsburgh for our October 2009 Meetup (an unique opportunity not to be missed) as well as for activities connected with the 20-year anniversary of the Velvet Revolution (Carol will provide more details). Also details about the upcoming Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International (CGSI) conference in Cleveland, OH (October 14-17, 2009) can be provided (see the program and registration forms in Files section of the Meetup website).

Let's meet at the beginning of beautiful fall 2009 and have some conversation in Czech / Slovak / English, this time with Irish beer (we will feel as being inside EU ). We rely on you so please plan for this Meetup (since the Czech elections are out of picture now), do not forget RSVP through our website and come to meet.

Thank you and we hope to see many of you on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 6:00 PM.

Thank you,

Pavel

Hello everyone,

We will meet (again :-) at Roland in the Strip District in the upstairs bar area (if open - if not, downstairs as last time). We hope to meet more of you, some new local Pittsburgh Czechs should be coming too. We may talk about and schedule the summer Czech cookout party, Robin volunteered to use his place (thank you Robin!).

Let's meet in the middle of summer and have some conversation in Czech with Czech beer. Hopefully, Carol will bring more details about the fall PIT program, so we can plan some Czech activities at the academic ground.

Looking forward to see you again!

I have decided to try something different and may change if the response is not favorable for attendance. How about a late Sunday afternoon for good fellowship and to take our minds off all of the yard work that we should be doing. Let me know if this special Sunday edition of Czechs in the Burgh would work for you.
