"Grandma friendly" VoIP for the home (DMS Members only)

Open to DMS members

Stan Simmons will be teaching a class on "Grandma friendly" VoIP for the home on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, from 3-7pm in the Ladybird classroom. It will be free and open to DMS members only for this first session. I will be limiting this class session to 10 people, please post here or email me directly at [masked] to sign up.

The class will show how to setup a single line VoIP system that uses your existing telephone handsets and internet service. If you are currently using Verizon FiOS telephone service, this will save you more than $275.00 per year on telephone service. Other carriers may be more or less, but most will be in the $20/month range of savings. It is "Grandma friendly" in that once it is setup, the users don't have to do anything different than what they did before to use the phone.

The services that I will cover in class range from Free to $10/mo, with the recommended option being $3.13/mo ($75/2yrs). It does require one piece of hardware, an Analog Telephone Adapter that ranges from $38 to $75 on Amazon.

What the class covers:

Pros and Cons of VoIP • Testing your Internet connection • Purchasing an Obihai OBi100 ATA • Choosing a VoIP provider • Porting your home number • Setting up the ATA to talk to the VoIP provider • Connecting the ATA to the internet and home telephone wiring • Disconnecting the home telephone wiring from the phone company • E911 over VoIP • Using your smartphone as your home phone, both at home and away from home • Using Google Voice for free calls after May 15, 2014.

Purchasing an Obihai OBi100 ATA:
Go to http://smile.amazon.com/ and choose Dallas Makerspace to support. Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice. Purchasing a OBi100 on Amazon will net DMS about $0.19 each, but if you purchase a lot of stuff on Amazon please keep DMS in mind and use http://smile.amazon.com/.

Search Amazon for Obihai to get a list of the available VoIP phone adapters. Retail for the OBi100 is $59.99, but Amazon usually has it on sale for $38 to $40. If you want to support two phone lines, the OBi202 is available. Retail for the OBi202 is $99.99, but Amazon usually has it on sale for $60 to $75.

Obihai boxes often show up on craigslist and eBay for less money.
