Are you just going to install linux ? which flavor

A fun flavor is Puppy Linux. Distribution fits on half a CD. Theme is "it just works". I use the Precise sub flavor based on the long term supported Ubuntu.

Open Suse has a steeper learning curve but uses Red Hat style repositories complete with updates detection.
