We're looking at ways of how we don't have to enforce developers to adhere to coding standards, but still have standards...

Alternatively, you could have them run lint to check their code. If your standards are acknowledged and accepted by your developers, then lint will remind them of what they should be doing and, over a period of time, they will code correctly from the get-go just to seek lint NOT give them warnings and errors.
