Building a Rails App From the Ground Up!

Lars Levie has graciously agreed to do a 10-minute talk titled "The misunderstood 'inject' method and his merry band."

Lars explains: "In Ruby, 'each' is the de facto substitute for the 'for' loop. However, there are five other powerful substitutes for iterating over sets: inject, collect, detect, select, and reject."

Wes Robinson will give us a brief demo on a topic TBD and then...

We begin a segment that will surely take us through many meetings: Building a Rails app from the ground up. If you're new to Rails -- or just a little shaky on how all the parts fit together -- I think this segment will be very helpful.

So, in the future, the plan will be:

7.00 - 7.15 Eat pizza, say hi, etc.

7.15 - 7.45 Brief presos/demos

7.45 -8.45 Building a Rails app from the ground up

Hope you can come!

    What is parking like?

I think the confusion may be that there's a big official looking parking meter and sign in the middle of the lot. I was lucky in that I heard the building security guard yelling "Don't pay! Don't pay!" while I was walking up to the machine. She seemed pretty confident that I wouldn't get towed, but I don't know why that would be.

Well, see Jordan, that's because you pay attention. I apparently, and in contrast, just park anywhere... oops. :)

I'm a complete newbie to Ruby and Ruby on Rails. I met some cool guys, ate pizza, comfortable chairs, and got hands-on experience building an app.

Lars gave a very useful presentation and the entire meetup went well. Thanks Hal and Wes.

I really like the idea of building an app together! I think it will be a great experience for all skill levels. If you're not learning you're teaching, if you're teaching you're learning, thus we'll all be learning. There has to be an easier method than my if else "Learning" method I just wrote, right? :-)
