Nerdy Fun Activity Planning Commission

Starbucks @ Nashua Exit 6 (map)

Selected By: Dave S
Sure, you like dancing and volleyball, but you also like to play with technology and create things just because you can. It's been a while since you've had someone to play and scheme with. Bring your toys and your crazy dreams.

From chatting with people I get the sense that there are some intriguing nerds among us. Photographers, knitters, map makers, artists, composers, Web 2.0 enthusiasts, branding specialists, wargamers, gardeners...you name it. While there are plenty of groups that cater to these specific interests, I'm interested in putting together a coalition of social-minded enthusiasts of any type to share their freaky knowledge with people who like to learn. If you like learning about other people's interests and lives, you'll enjoy this hosted conversation. Bring some of your favorite toys and a story to go along with them.

Some of the things I'm thinking of doing are somehow combining our talents to create a scavenger hunt for the fall, along the lines of "The Amazing Race" combined with "Mythbusters". Stupid, geeky, friendly fun.

This first meeting is to gauge the interest of people out there and do some brainstorming. Future events will be logistical (finding inexpensive supplies, talking to interesting store owners, collecting GPS locations and background information around the Nashua area), craft-based (creating the material resources we need) and mission-based (applying the knowledge and resources we've created in the outside world).

I run a low-pressure, supportive group...if you'd like to just sit and listen in, that's fine. If you have some crazy ideas of your own, that's good too! My personal goal is to help you find out fascinating things about the person sitting right next to you. If that's up your alley, come sit in with us!

I am new to meetup.com and this sounds like something I can relate to. I have a lot of GPS experience and geocaching. I was even working on some caches involving lasers to find. I have a family commitment but may be able to stop by.

This was our first meeting to see what kind of interest there was in creating a different kind of group activity centered around people's interests. We had a random person stop by to ask about the group too. For a first meeting, very positive. I'll post notes.

Great meetup for trying off-the-wall stuff. Seems like folks are willing to explore whatever comes along.
