What is the age range?
As our events are held in bars, you must be 21+ to attend. Other than that, we do not set any specific age ranges, and we actively seek to have all demographics represented at each event.
How do you achieve a balanced gender ratio?
We require advance registration and payment in order to ensure an even gender distribution. While our format does not require a perfectly even ratio, we do guarantee a fair balance or your next event is on us.
Is Dating for Nerds a speed dating event? How is it similar or dissimilar to speed dating?
No, Dating for Nerds is not a speed dating event!
It is similar to speed dating in that the evening is structured and formatted so that every nerd will get to meet every nerdette by the end of the night.
It is dissimilar in that, rather than very short one-on-one encounters, attendees get to know each other by playing board games in small groups. After 20-30 minutes of gaming, one group moves to the next table, and so on throughout the evening. During the gaming sessions, men will be grouped with other men, while women will be grouped with other women.
Another difference is that Dating for Nerds does not do post-event matchmaking. We want to empower our nerds to take their love lives into their own hands, so please come to each event prepared both to 'make your move' and to accept (or not) any interested parties!
Do I need a wingman?
While you are more than welcome to bring a single friend with you, our events are formatted in a way that you won't need a wingman/woman! The environment is friendly and low-pressure, and the event hosts make sure everyone is comfortable. Plus, each party features an activity, such as social bingo, that runs from check-in until the rounds of board games start, so you're never left to break the ice on your own.
Should I bring games?
We provide the games, but if you have a social/party game that is easy to learn and can be played in a large group and completed in about 30 minutes (think Apples to Apples), feel free to bring it along.
What does the $30 cover?
Nerds at Heart is a small, for-profit singles events company, similar to Mingle Around and Lock-and-Key (also on Meetup.com). The $30 is actually the cost of the service we provide; it is what is required to cover the time and personnel needed to coordinate and host well-organized events, as well as develop our business to provide an even more quality experience for our attendees. In addition to board gaming, our events include drink specials, prizes, and giveaways.
How do I pay?
When you RSVP "Yes" on Meetup, it prompts you to pay via Paypal. If you have already RSVP'ed without paying, simply return to the event's page on Meetup and you'll find a payment link next to where it says "Price."
Can I confirm / pay closer to the date?
Yes. Please keep in mind though that an earlier registration helps us to better plan the logistics for each event.
While we understand that plans change, please make an effort to attend the parties you RSVP for. This helps us maintain gender balance.
What should I wear?
Our events have no dress code, but our tip is to wear whatever you would be comfortable in to go out to dinner or drinks with friends.
What time does this event end?
Our events are 3 hours long, with check-in beginning 30 minutes before the official start time. All attendees are welcome to stay and mingle after the event is over.
Help! There's someone I like at this event but I'm scared to make a move.
No worries, Dating for Nerds attendees are some of the nicest people you'll find anywhere! For best results, we recommend that you give your contact info to the person who catches your eye. If they return the gesture or promise to call, you're in!
I have event feedback. What's the best way to share it?
We appreciate your comments and suggestions. As a courtesy, please email us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org rather than posting them on Meetup. If you're not satisfied with your experience for any reason, your next event is on us. We love hearing compliments and success stories as well!
