Rock Creek Park Exploration - 11 miles

  • Mar 23, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

If you combine Rock Creek Park's Valley and Western Ridge Trails they form an 11-mile loop and should make for a great day hike right in the city. I have never actually done this full loop, so it will be a little bit of an adventure but good thing is we are never far from civilization. So you need a sense of adventure for this one, or have done it before.

I found out there is plenty of parking at the Nature Center. It is also accessible by a combo of metro/bus. From either Friendship Heights Metro station (red) or Fort Totten Metro station (red/green/yellow), take Metrobus E2 or E3 along Military Rd. Get off at Oregon Ave (opposite Glover Rd). From SE corner of intersection, walk uphill on paved path for 400 yards to the Nature Center.

Everyone must have a map: http://www.nps.gov/rocr/planyourvisit/upload/ROCRmap1.pdf

Hike Details:

Meet at 9am. We will take off down the trail by 9:15am.

11 miles - This is NOT an easy hike. I would say it is moderate.

I think it should take about 5-6 hours with time for sightseeing stops

Terrain: Mostly dirt or stony dirt; some pavement, grass; rocky, rooty in places.

Weather: http://www.weather.com/weather/right-now/DCNPRC:13

What to bring/how to prepare:

1. Water and snacks

2. Everyone must have a map (http://www.nps.gov/rocr/planyourvisit/upload/ROCRmap1.pdf)

3. Dress in layers - preferably no cotton - and bring rain gear depending on weather

I will send out my phone number to attendees a few days before the hike in case you need to reach me the morning of the hike. If you have questions, in the meantime, you can email me through my profile page or post them below in the discussion section.

I'm trying to change my RSVP but the system doesn't allow me.
Hollis, can you please check it so another person can attend? Thanks

    March 21, 2013

    • Moi

Hollis: i tried ot RSVP again now but system did not allow me to. Pls let me know. thnx!

      March 22, 2013

    • Hollis

I don't understand why the system won't let you RSVP b/c someone else just RSVPed w/o any trouble. You need to go in and Change Your RSVP at the top of the page. I'll try to move you in and you'll get a message saying you've been moved in and requesting you to pay $1.

Sorry, have to back out. My knee is still bothering me.

    March 21, 2013

    • Hollis

We'll miss you Joe. Take care of that knee for now. There's plenty of good hiking weather ahead.

    • Joe

Thanks. Definitely hope to make the April backpacking trips...

  • Hollis

B/c this is my first time leading a group there and only my second time leading a group all together, I want to keep this one small, but I promise to do it again soon with more spaces :)

Let me know if you expand the wait list. Right now no spots left even on the wait list.

    March 7, 2013

    • Hollis

There shouldn't be a restriction on the waitlist. I'll check into that.

If someone becomes a co-leader then more people can attend.

Sounds good. I am potentially interested, if I'm there that Saturday. I have done the entire 11-mile day hike before, plus I have hiked both the Valley Trail and Western Ridge Trails too many times to be able to count them. (I live two blocks from the Valley Trail, but near the south end, not the Silver Spring end). Since I know the trails well, I'm happy to help with logistics...

    • Hollis

Great! Would love to have you along Rachel :)

      March 6, 2013

    • Rachel

I'm glad the meeting place is now the Nature Center. I too can attest that there are tons of parking spots there. And plus, it's a 45 min. walk from my house, so it's easier for me to get there. : )

Assuming no further injury would love to join. Happy for reasonable distance with nearby bailout options, just don't laugh at me if I use my poles ;p

    March 6, 2013

    • Hollis

I'm laughing already. Just kidding, I love my poles. Hope you can make it. And we can always call you a cab if you need it ;)
