If you combine Rock Creek Park's Valley and Western Ridge Trails they form an 11-mile loop and should make for a great day hike right in the city. I have never actually done this full loop, so it will be a little bit of an adventure but good thing is we are never far from civilization. So you need a sense of adventure for this one, or have done it before.
I found out there is plenty of parking at the Nature Center. It is also accessible by a combo of metro/bus. From either Friendship Heights Metro station (red) or Fort Totten Metro station (red/green/yellow), take Metrobus E2 or E3 along Military Rd. Get off at Oregon Ave (opposite Glover Rd). From SE corner of intersection, walk uphill on paved path for 400 yards to the Nature Center.

Meet at 9am. We will take off down the trail by 9:15am.
11 miles - This is NOT an easy hike. I would say it is moderate.
I think it should take about 5-6 hours with time for sightseeing stops
Terrain: Mostly dirt or stony dirt; some pavement, grass; rocky, rooty in places.
What to bring/how to prepare:
1. Water and snacks
2. Everyone must have a map (http://www.nps.gov/rocr/planyourvisit/upload/ROCRmap1.pdf)
3. Dress in layers - preferably no cotton - and bring rain gear depending on weather
I will send out my phone number to attendees a few days before the hike in case you need to reach me the morning of the hike. If you have questions, in the meantime, you can email me through my profile page or post them below in the discussion section.
