15 mile Sherman Gap to Buzzard Rocks hike, wine and cheese tasting finale

Come out with us for a day hike and short wine and lasagna tasting to end your wee

kend!

Updated route! The Sherman Gap to Buzzard Rocks trail is a ridge east of the Massanutten Trail, which is a 71-mile National Recreation Trail located in George Washington National Forest in Central Virginia.

The path will take us around the, around the Sherman Gap up the ridge over several small peaks including High Peak to the Buzzard Rocks climbing area shown in the picture, . We will have the opportunity to practice belaying at the Buzzard Rocks for anyone wanting to practice during our short lunch break, as well as a chance to talk about safety tips for steep inclines!

The return trail declines along the ridge, veers off back down the mountain, past the Elizabeth Furnace ruins to the trail head. This is a 15 mile hike, expecting to last around 6 hours not including breaks.

We will carpool from Centreville park and ride to the Signal Knob Trailhead: [masked],[masked].

The hike should wrap up around 3:30pm. After the hike we will stop at the winery for cheese and wine tasting.

Great time! One thing I'm still confused about - so do barber poles really just spin? There's no continuous ribbon that goes from top to bottom...?

Marc, this lasgna stuff looks awesome, YUM! Did you let them know we are coming?

From the website. Lasagna Lunches Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Mondays through the end of March
Don’t let winter chill you to the bone – warm yourself and your spirits with Chef Eric Stamer’s famous lasagna lunch. Available in sausage or vegetable with garlic bread for $11 and with a glass of wine only $15. Plan a nice afternoon out for two – or bring a group – we can’t wait to see you out on the mountain!

Hey What are the coordinates of the starting point of this hike? I was hoping to figure out driving time more accurately, as I would like to be back in time for an evening concert on Sunday. THANK YOU!

Hi. We will start from signal knob trail parking lot:[masked],[masked] no later than 8:15am. I cannot gaurantee you will still want to skip the wine tasting with the group after a great hike with this group, but you can try :) Of course if there are others who want to skip the wine tasting, may you can all carpool together too ...

      March 19, 2013

    • Ansu

I love that winery and have been several times. Would love to join, but I have to be back for the Sigur Ros concert at GMU Fairfax by 6:30 p.m. :)

ok, so my car is full with Kemeria, Lola and Kristen. Is Dupont Metro station (north, on Connecticut Avenue as 20th is occupied by the farmers' market) ok for everybody? If we have to be at 7am in Centerville, we should meet at 6am to make sure we are on time. Is it ok?
Just in case, my phone is[masked]

Hi everyone. I have updated the trail route, to simplify logistics, and improve the sights. We will start at the Signal Knob Trailhead, but still complete the ridge walk from Shermans Gap - Shawls Gap - Buzzard Rocks. I will send out a weather report Saturday.

I have not yet done this trail! Is it 15 miles total or 15 miles out and 15 miles back?

    March 1, 2013

    • Michelle A.

Diana, to finish by the proposed 2pm, it is 15 mile total (a 30 miles would take alot longer to hike)

      March 1, 2013

    • marc

I'm sure you all can do both, but for my sake were only going to do 15 miles. The trail one way is expected to be around 8 miles, so we may go over 15, but not by much.

      March 1, 2013

I would as well! Near Van Ness metro station, could get to any of those areas.
