We will step off from the trailhead Saturday morning at 9:00AM and hike about 8-9 miles in to a campsite along the North River. On Sunday morning, we will get up at a leisurely hour, have breakfast, break camp, and hike out 3-4 miles along the North River with numerous crossings along the way.
I will be driving from Fredericksburg and plan to arrive at the trailhead at 7:30AM on Saturday morning. Those coming from the DC area could do the same which means getting up very early on Saturday morning. An alternative would be to arrive on Friday evening and stay at North River Campground which is only 5 miles from the trailhead. The downside of this option means you will have to deal with the very bad Friday afternoon/evening traffic leaving the DC area. For either option, the Centreville Park & Ride is a good location to meet for car pooling since overnight free parking is available.
A general description of the route can be found on the Hiking Upward site:
We will meet Saturday morning at the trailhead indicated in the Hiking Upward trail map which is slightly different from the location used for the Hiking Upward driving directions. The correct grid coordinates are[masked], -79.1757.
Remember to bring footwear suitable for fording the North River. We have to ford it 8 times on Sunday. Also, hiking poles are recommended to provide stability when you are fording the river. I will bring an extra set of poles.
I plan to use a hammock. Those that are bringing tents may want to coordinate with others to share a tent. This will help reduce the load in your packs since one can carry the tent and another can carry the poles. This coordination can typically occur at the trailhead before we start down the trail.
