Swimming In White Oak and Cedar Run Canyons' with a Hawksbill bonus!

This is a last minute replacement for our Great Range Traverse Extreme Hike we are rescheduling due to rain and wind.  The weather for Saturday in the White Oak and Cedar Run Canyons' is supposed to be sunny with a high of 83, so thought swimming would be in order with a quick jaunt up to Hawksbill to get us hot and ready to swim again on the way down.  We will try to find a BBQ pit rumored to be nearby with of course a stop at a local winery, so details to follow!  Map of our route is here:

http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/WhiteOakCedarRun/

Gear List

As always, be sure to bring plenty of water and trail food for this hike.  2 to 3 liters of water are suggested. You should also bring extra socks and dress in layers.  Always carry good rain gear as well.   Proper fitting footwear suitable for hiking is essential.  Swim suit, towel, camera, and fun not optional on this adventure!

I plan to stop in Centerville, but just in case something happens, are we meeting on Skyline Drive, or at the lower parking lot?

    August 30, 2013

    • Steve M

Hi Christine, we'll be parking in the lower lot shown in the HikingUpward link posted above.

Hey Jim, it's possible I won't stay for the winery, so maybe it's better if I go in my own car. Thanks for the offer though. See you in the morning!

    Hi All,
Are we hiking the whole 12 hours or people can disperse at their time of convinience if they have commitment in the other half of day? Also, is anyone driving from Herndon/Reston area, i would like to carpool and also split the gas money, if i am not mistaken its probably 2 hours drive. Can anyone throw some idea?

    August 30, 2013

    • Jim N.

Suraj we stick together on the hikes in this group for safety, as I have never lost anyone in my years of leading. Please read the route description as it contains how long the hike will last. Some of us are stopping at a winery and maybe dinner as well on the way back, so that is where a lot of the time goes.

Hey all, I've decided to drive to the Park & Ride from Dupont. If anyone needs a ride from the Dupont area I'm glad to give you a lift. I plan on leaving at 7:20am. Jim & Christine, thank you both for offering a ride!

    August 30, 2013

  • kelley

Hi All - I'm not sure who all is planning to drive. I can drive or carpool with someone else from the park and ride - however I would like to be in a car that stops at a winery en route back! I can either do the Centreville park & ride at 8am, or pick a few folks up from Vienna metro (7:30am) if needed and head out from there.

    August 30, 2013

    • Jim N.

You are welcome to ride with me Kelley and yes I am stopping at the winery you suggested....looks like a plan to me and thanks for suggesting and posting it!

      August 30, 2013

  • Christine

Hey everyone! This'll be my first time hiking with this group - I'm looking forward to it! I'll be driving from the Takoma/Silver Spring area and can take anyone who can get to that area by 7am or so. Otherwise I'll see everyone at Centreville PnR at 8. (Also, I may continue on rather than stopping to swim, but I'll make a game-time decision on that....)

    • Jim N.

It will be great to catch up Chrissy this hike is just about fun, not a training hike.

Hi Christine, I would like to carpool with you. I live in Silver Spring. I can meet with you at 7:00am.

Separately, Narmada winery is en route back and would be a great place to stop. Their wines are pretty good, they have live music until 5pm tomorrow, and and extended menu of Indian food being served until 5:30pm, and a lovely deck overlooking the vineyard and I think also the mountains. They don't need reservations if our party is 8 or smaller. Here's a link to their website: http://www.narmadawinery.com/

Keep it in mind if you want to do this post-hike - most places are only open until 5 or 6pm. Narmada will let us linger until 6:30pm if needed.

Jim what time should I be at the trail head?

hey all i decided it's just easier for me to drive to the Centreville Park & Ride. If anyone needs a ride from Dupont, let me know. I plan on leaving at 7:15am.

    August 30, 2013

  • Bill

Could I possibly ride out to Centreville with someone? I live in DuPont but can meet you at any Metro and will gladly help pay for gas. Thanks!

    August 30, 2013

Bill - if you can be at Takoma metro by 7:15, I'm happy to take you!

I can also meet at a metro in DC for a ride, if Baltimore is not a good place for pickup. I can return on Sunday or Monday.

Hello, Who is driving up on Friday that I can ride with? Happy to share costs. I live in downtown DC near Chinatown and can meet at any Metro. Thanks.

I would like to return on Sunday but can be flexible on that.

    August 22, 2013

By the way, I would need a ride from Baltimore. I could take the bus up to White Marsh Park and Ride because it's right off of I-95.

Man ... I wish I could join you guys for this. I'm writing up the trips I just did in the ADKs, and dreaming of some of the same mountains. Looks awesome!

Thanks to Jim for letting me try out the half. Is there anyone I could carpool with up to the campground? I will provide gas money and do my best to meet you in a location that is convenient for you.

    August 14, 2013

  • Bryan

This would make for a great Labor day weekend! However, before I RSVP and attempt to demonstrate my capabilities, I need to be able to get there. Would anyone be interested in carpooling? I will cover my fair share of gas.

    August 13, 2013

    • Jim N.

Bryan, you have to be vetted to attend our Extreme Hike Series. We do a series of training hikes from Nov. until May each year for this purpose. I have not received your email per what is written in red above, thanks.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
