North Fork Mountain Backpacking Trip

One of the best backpacking trips in the Mid-Atlantic!  You need to be in good shape and able to carry heavier than normal loads, but the rewards are amazing!  If you have not been backpacking with me before please send me an email after signing up as I must vet accordingly since this is not an easy trip.  Whether we are socked in by clouds and fog or enjoy a rare clear day, this place is always magical!  This is one of my "cook over the fire" trips and I usually prefer steak and baked potato, but grilled veggies or fish are always good too!  So put this one on the calendar early as the views and pictures are always some of the best!  We will drive to the trail head on Friday night, where we will camp to get an early start on Saturday morning.  If we have a seasoned group we may walk up the mountain on Friday night as well, so will see who chooses to come.  This trip will require a car shuttle, so route will be weather dependent and will make the final choice once we are sure of snow depth and weather close to the event, but it will occur unless the roads are treacherous.  So time to saddle up for one of our classic winter/fall trips as the pictures do not lie!  ;-)

Thanks, Jim. I'd like to go but I'm a wimp and can't handle the winter elements! I'll have to wait for warmer weather to go backpacking again.

I'm glad I got to go on my first backpacking trip before we got hit with the bitter cold weather we are experiencing today! I can't imagine being out there in these conditions. It was a good trip for a beginner like me. I don't see any other events on the calendar geared to beginners though...

The December 13 trip I posted but not announced is for beginners and veterans to winter backpacking Christina as I will have 2 different distances.

Another great North Fork Mountain Trip without the views this time, but with the sharpest backpackers on the trail! Thanks everyone for coming out and look forward to seeing everyone on the winter version!

Great meeting all of you on this trip. Thank you Jim and Mignote for the funny running commentary, Kathryn for the enjoyable conversation down the trail, Christina for sporting the sharpest looking rain gear on the trail, Tracy for the tips on the lighter side of hiking, and Upasana for the lunch conversation overlooking the misty cliffs.

    October 8, 2013

    • Hua D.

7:30 pm is OK for me. It is raining now and all day today, and most of the night. Will be hard to make any camp fire for tonight. Looking forward to a good hike tomorrow.

Hi Jim - can we get some more info now that we are only two days out? Where are we going (Dolly Sods or North Fork) and on what trail? Where's the trail head (some of us may head out early)? And what's the water situation?

    October 9, 2013

    • kelley

Hi all - as I said - my apologies. I didn't realize this was really a 2-day trip when I first commented. I've done this before with Jim as a 2-day trip with a similar amount of people and it was a lovely trip and I don't believe anyone had safety concerns. I do think carrying an additional 3 liters of water for a third day would have made a bit of a difference. Have fun out there!

No problem. I'll see you all there tomorrow at 7:30. I could leave earlier, but I think that is still when Jim plans to meet up there.

BTW, this is a most helpful weather website http://weatherspark.com/#!dashboard;a=USA/WV/Seneca_Rocks. Found it through a friend who works at NOAA.

    October 10, 2013

    • Jim N.

Very nice Dan! The link I provide from weather.gov is NOAA as well in a different format.

First look at the weather is great, sunny and 68 for highs with lows of 48.

Hey Jim, are we going to need to pack in our water, or are there reliable water sources along our route?

    October 9, 2013

    • Brandon S.

Oh wait, didn't see that this might turn into a trip somewhere else. I was askin about NF.

      October 9, 2013

    • Jim N.

No water on North Fork Mountain Brandon so we must carry it all in.

I am leaving from Harpers Ferry area. Anyone want to carpool. If I am still off Friday I plan to go up early. Anyone else headed west early?

    October 7, 2013

    • Jim N.

If you are going up early Lori, let me know and I will give you directions. I am debating about how far to make this trip, so give me a call and we can talk about it.

    Thanks Jim for the confirmation:-)

Wondering about the fed closing and how it will affect the trip, it's a national forest so technically will be closed if the govt is still closed, also all the national forest campgrounds in the area will be closed if the plan was to camp there Friday night-ours was?

    October 6, 2013

    • Peter J.

If the plan included staying in a FS campground Friday night (Jim???) we'll need an alternate plan, like hiking in a ways to camp.

      October 6, 2013

    • Jim N.

This trip is not affected by the government shutdown in any way.

      October 7, 2013

I'll be wandering around the west of Ireland so won't be able to attend....I would say wish I was there but I don't.

I know we'll figure out transportation later but I just want to put it out there now that I'll need a ride to the trail head and back to Centreville. My car is not up for long distance driving. Thank you in advance.
