White Oak/Cedar Run Canyon's Frozen Waterfalls!

  • Jan 18, 2014 · 8:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Time for our annual frozen waterfall tour of these two beautiful canyons with all their wonderful waterfalls!  Join us for one of our classic Winter hikes in Shenandoah National Park!

Since this trip is so popular, winter time allows us to at least get a parking spot! These pictures are from the last couple Winters' hikes to let you know what you could be in for! Heavy rain/snow or if theparking lot/roads are not plowed or closed will cancel the trip.

This is a strenuous hike with over 2450' gain in elevation over about 8 miles total length, with an optional 1.5 mile out and back up to Hawksbill summit, the highest peak in SNP.

We'll split up into smaller groups once we arrive at the trailhead.  Some will do the loop clockwise starting with Cedar Run while others will go counterclockwise starting with White Oak Canyon.

Please bring a lunch, snacks, plenty of water, and dress in layers to keep yourself warm and dry, including not getting so hot you sweat a lot, which inexperienced winter backpackers tend to not understand...since it's winter! So let's get out mid-winter to enjoy a great hike, so mark this one on the calendar early!

First, thanks to all the great leaders Bernard, Kathryn, Becky and Emma for all the great help. Though we did not get any frozen falls, the fresh snow with a lot at Hawksbill Gap (about 10") along with blue skies, made for a fabulous winter hike, so thanks everyone old and new and look forward to getting out with everyone again soon!

Jumping on the "good times!" bandwagon.... And since I want to keep getting out in the cold, I went and bought better gloves yesterday :)

I am considering renting a cabin that holds 6 but people can camp in the yard and post a training hike the next day if people are interested, so let me know as I could not find a campground near there for us.

Hi team. Sorry but will have to drop out of this weekend. Still looking after Seneca our rescue dog and doggy care for this weekend has let me down. Have a great time. Dave

      Veronica

Thanks for the great tip. I can't leave Seneca with a kennel, no matter how sweet they are. As you probably know we saved her as a group weekend before last and she has gone through a lot. I had thought her new family (sadly I can't have her as alone, and have to travel a lot with work) would have her Friday now she's an awful lit better, but they are unable to have her until Sunday, at which point I need to be around to hand her over

Hi David, WatchPaws is not a kennel , but I understand your concerns, I don't leave my dogs in a kennel either. :)

Does this mean no Griffin Tavern? That's pretty sad pandas. I may just go there myself and get a steak.

Final look at the weather is a high of 31 with a low of 17 the night before so there will some ice along with a skiff of snow, so a wonderful day for a hike. There may be some wind as well, especially if you go up to Hawksbill, so be prepared accordingly.

Is this a good dog hike? If it is, I'll be coming from Takoma Park and can pick up anyone from that metro or at Dunkin Donuts… Will have space for 3 dog friendly riders...

    January 16, 2014

    • Jim N.

As long as the dog is well behaved and leashed, per Park Rules

      January 16, 2014

    January 16, 2014

Is there going to be snow on the ground? Does anyone know the current snow conditions on the trail? :)

    January 13, 2014

    • Bill P.

No snow at all on Sunday January 10, even at the highest elevations. Rain melted every last flake.

      January 13, 2014

    • Jim N.

Great day for a hike though. Can't be responsible for the weather.

      January 15, 2014

Weather for Saturday will be sunny with a high of 31. No snow is forecast and the Falls will not be very frozen, but a great day for a hike.

Can someone elaborate on the overnight stay and training the next day? It's a little over the week away and I didn't plan for any sort of camping or additional hike. Thanks!

    January 9, 2014

    • Jim N.

Planning a training hike on Sunday Anderew. Been so busy I have not been able to post it. Was going to do so tomorrow. I rented a cabin, which is full but people can sleep in the yard in their tents.

      January 10, 2014

  • Bryan

I don't know if I'll be able to stay for the training hike the next day, so I was wondering if it would be OK to add on Hawksbill and maybe a couple other vistas for the hike on Saturday.

    January 7, 2014

    • Jim N.

It depends on the weather conditions if we can squeeze Hawksbill in, such as snow, ice, etc., but if we can I am sure some people will be up for going up there. That will make for 3 groups now instead of 2, which will complicate the logistics. Please think about what it takes to run an event like this and not lose anyone and get everyone back down to the cars as a group since it's winter and if you get lost can freeze to death on the mountain.
