Chimney Rocks 13mile Shenandoah dayhike and RedBeard Brewing Company Tour!

Start out the new year with a grand hike up to Chimney Rocks and back down to the RedBeard Brewing Company for a local beer/beverage tasting.

The route will include a fun trip through  Riprap Trail up to Chimney rocks, around the AT to take in many sights and enjoy a short lunch.  Finally we will return down Wildcat Ridge.

We will carpool from Centreville park and ride to the Riprap Trailhead.

The hike should wrap up around 5pm, and we will stop at the Redbeard Brewery in Staunton before returning.

Even if you have no interest in beer, come share a day of adventure with a great hike through the Shenandoah!

We expect to be back in Centreville by 8pm.

I will send an update on the weather conditions shortly before the event, but its always best to come prepared for any weather that presents itself!

In case you need a ride or can offer one, let people know in the comments section.

Maybe not phenominal but loads of fun and energetic group! Thanks for a great day together, staying together and helping with logistics, and especially to one new member for showing us how not to cross the stream multiple times! I hope it was a very memorable trip for everyone :)

I'm not sure yet. I have to swing through Arlington before Centerville, so probably 5:30ish. I'll confirm by Saturday.

    It's too cold for me....I'm a wimp.

Gotta bail on this one. I don't think the pup can handle that long in those temps. But hope we can both make it out to more hikes when the temp rises a little more.

(Hummm, let's give this a try...)Hello all, any chance I could car pool with a group leaving from centerville?

    January 24, 2014

    • marc

Were all going to group up at Centreville so sont worry if you dont have a seat reserved.

Beautiful snowy trails are awaiting us this weekend, so I hope no one is getting cold feet yet! Get your heart warming stories ready to keep us warm and cheery on the trail...
The current forecast in southwestern shenandoah is for dry partly sunny weather warming up throughout the day from single digits to the mid 20s, with a slight wind: http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Hawksbill-Mountain/forecasts/1234
Since we will be hiking for 6-8 hours, please bring some water, and snacks, and do yourself a favor and prepare your body for this hike by drinking extra water and eating a good breakfast before getting to the trailhead! TBC-

Continuing - I hope to leave Centreville by 7:05am so that we are on the trail by 9am. There is a tricky parking situation at the trailhead so please call for directions if you miss us at Centreville!
The morning start will be probably feel like single digits, so please bring your warm winter layers and shoes if possible: windproof pants (I like soft shell hiking pants) and insulated jacket (down jacket will be good for sitting down and starting out and also a sweater or warm wind resistant mid layer for the most of the hike); pair of water proof shoes would be good since we will have to cross the occasional stream and snow drift. Feel free to bring boot covers and ice spikes if you have them but not required. Don't forget warm gloves, hat, and your warm spirits!

hey, marc, when you check on weather conditions and report back, can you give us a ballpark elevation gain? it might help some of us plan our footwear, etc. i did look at the map on the link you posted, but i didn't see elevation listed....

    January 24, 2014

    • marc

The estimated elevation change is 2500ft. I will add the clothing recommendations in a message above: in short, its not bikini and sandal weather I'm afraid :)

      January 24, 2014

    • Joanne

where i was last weekend (cedar run/white oak) was snowy, with some ice in patches, but not lots and lots of ice. my thoughts on elevation and steepness were sort of around the slippery quotient.

Marc, can you confirm the Rip Rap trail head parking lot coordinates are[masked], [masked] ? I got these off the Hiking Upward page.

    January 24, 2014

    • marc

Hi. We are not starting from the Skyline Drive trailhead, but from Crimora side trailhead. Call me or text me if you have a full car and don't want to stop at Centreville - I will send you the meeting address near the trailhead.

Will dogs be allowed on the hike? (Obviously not @ the brewery.) He's very social and well behaved.
    Thanks!

    January 11, 2014

    • marc

Hi Jennifer. As far as I know yes it is allowed. There are some rocky sections and it will be 5-6 hrs of hiking, so please check with your doggie to make sure he or she is up for the adventure :)

I took to hiking last year after a decades long break and hiked a section of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. My goal is to hike 1,000 miles this year, with an October return to Spain to take on another chunk of the Camino. This hike looks like a great start to that ambition!

I'm glad to hear you were hiking in an exciting place and want to do more. Certainly lots of us can relate and will want to swap stories! Stay tuned for the weather update and tips i will post on Friday to help you prepare...
